Katie Kirby
BS: Psychology, Missouri Valley College (2008)
MA: Community Counseling, Missouri Valley College (2016)
Katie began working at Missouri Valley College as a mental health counselor in October 2021. As part of the MVC Counseling staff, Katie provides individual counseling, education, and referral assistance to campus students, faculty, staff, and coaches.
Katie has over 9 years of clinical mental health experience, ranging from work at a children’s advocacy center, having owned her own private practice, and in the university mental health setting. Throughout her career, she has provided care to clients presenting with an array of needs and severity, including working with childhood trauma, specializing in work with children as a Registered Play Therapist in her past, and work under the umbrella of anxiety, depression, trauma and their impacts on daily relationships with self and others.
Utilizing a variety of modalities, Katie aims to help her clients by providing a safe environment for clients to feel heard, respected, and understood. Self-improvement often takes place by creating a safe, trusted, and positive counseling relationship that leads to exploration of thoughts, including styles of self-talk, feelings, and behaviors. She enjoys helping clients to reflect on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, to find solutions through use of personal values, and to work towards healthier relationship boundaries, intra- and interpersonally.
Originally from Sedalia, MO, Katie is a former Missouri Valley College student-athlete with a passion for music, traveling, skiing, and spending time with her family.
