Ways to work
Find the right fit.
Missouri Valley offers several ways to work on campus, each with its own eligibility.
Federal Work-Study
Part-time jobs for domestic undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, based on the FAFSA. Full-time and part-time students are eligible.
MVU Work Study
Part-time jobs for full-time domestic students, based on student and departmental needs.
Student employees
Positions with Fresh Ideas, our dining partner, plus a few skilled roles like ITS assistants and academic coaches in the Murrell Library & Academic Support Center.
Summer employment
Summer positions for students with specific skills, such as grounds, maintenance, and housekeeping crews.
Graduate assistantships
Professional roles in athletics, student engagement, and administrative offices, with tuition and sometimes room and board.
Internships
Real-world experience that applies what you learn, builds your resume, and often leads to job offers.
Work study
How to get hired.
These steps apply to both Federal Work-Study and MVU Work Study.
1
Confirm your eligibility
The Manager of Student Work Study, the Director of Student Work Program, or the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid can confirm whether you qualify.
2
Visit the work study office
Learn which departments have openings and complete your required paperwork. During fall check-in, the office has a station set up to help.
3
Interview and sign your contract
Interview with the supervisor. If they want to hire you, you’ll both sign a Student Employment Contract and a FERPA Non-Disclosure Agreement for the school year.
4
Get processed through HR
Your contract and paperwork are processed through HR. You may begin work only after this step is complete.
5
Work, track hours, and get paid
Hours are tracked on the time clock or a time sheet. Pay is direct-deposited on the 25th of each month.

Required paperwork
• I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
• W-4 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
• Payroll Authorization Agreement
• FERPA Non-Disclosure Agreement
• Automatic Payroll Deduction Form (optional)
Students can’t begin working until they’ve met the requirements of the university’s accounts receivable policy or completed the payroll deduction form.
Pay periods and payday
Each pay period runs from the 16th of one month through the 15th of the next. Payday is the 25th of the month, by direct deposit to the bank on your Payroll Authorization Agreement.
Time sheets are due by close of business on the first business day after the last workday of the pay period, so payroll can pay you by the 25th.
For supervisors: hiring a work study student
After interviewing a student you want to hire, email studentemployment@moval.edu or call extension 4451 with the student’s name, student ID number, department (for example, Athletics), and division (for example, Women’s Lacrosse).
Track hours with the time clock (preferred) or the Missouri Valley time sheet form.
International students
International students aren’t eligible for Federal Work-Study, but F-1 students can work in qualifying on-campus jobs, such as dining (Fresh Ideas), Maintenance, the Library, the Mail Room, and the International Office. Openings depend on which departments are hiring.
1. Visit the International Office, first floor of the Ferguson Center, to confirm your status allows you to work.
2. Get a written Hiring Authorization from the hiring department (for dining jobs, Fresh Ideas).
3. If you have a Social Security number, take the authorization to HR Manager Christi Hicks to receive your employment paperwork.
4. If you don’t, take the authorization to Yesenia Farfan in the International Office for a Student Status Letter, then to HR for an Employment Letter.
5. Take both letters, your passport, I-94 printout, and I-20 to the Social Security Office in Sedalia to apply. You can find the application at SSA.gov.
6. You may begin working after your Social Security Office visit, but you can’t be paid until your card arrives. Bring your SSA confirmation letter to HR.
7. When your card arrives (usually in 10–14 days), return to HR to complete your application, W-4, I-9, direct deposit authorization (U.S. bank required), and email agreement. Bring your passport, Social Security card, and I-94 printout.
Graduate assistantships
Graduate assistants develop professional skills by contributing to Missouri Valley departments, offices, and activities, including athletics, student engagement, and administrative offices.
Eligibility
• A bachelor’s degree completed before the assistantship starts
• Acceptance into an applied graduate program
• A minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA, or 3.0 if you’ve completed graduate work
• International students must have a Social Security number
Benefits and hours
Depending on the position, benefits may include tuition, university housing, and meals. Work agreements cover tuition only for all positions except Resident Coordinator Graduate Assistants (RCGAs), who can’t hold other campus jobs, including with Fresh Ideas. Benefits not used can’t be paid out. Graduate assistants can’t exceed 28 hours a week (0.74 FTE) across all campus work, and students on visas are limited to 20 hours a week (0.50 FTE) during the academic year.
How to apply
Open positions are posted on Employment Opportunities. Submit a resume to the position supervisor, or complete the Graduate Assistant Application (opens in a new tab) to join the general applicant pool. Once you accept a position, you’ll sign a Graduate Assistant Work Agreement and complete onboarding with HR Manager Christi Hicks, Ferguson Center, second floor, before you begin work.
For supervisors
Copy the work agreement template, complete it with your GA, and have it signed electronically. Share it with Jennifer Livengood (Offices and Schools) and Mike Elam (Director of Student Employment), then transfer ownership of the document to Mike Elam. Agreements last up to one calendar year and can be renewed. Templates: Offices and Schools (opens in a new tab) · Athletics (opens in a new tab). After signing, complete the MVU New Hire Information document under Human Resources in the Missouri Application Launcher.
Student resident assistants
Students in bona fide educational programs who serve as resident assistants and receive reduced room or board charges or tuition credits generally aren’t considered employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), so they aren’t entitled to minimum wage or overtime under the FLSA.
Internships
Internships are offered in most associate, bachelor’s, and master’s programs, and many programs require them. They help you apply classroom knowledge, build transferable skills and professional connections, strengthen your resume, refine your career goals, and build confidence. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers consider internship experience one of the most influential factors in hiring decisions.
The Student Work Program Office can help you look for internships on campus, and Athletics offers internship opportunities too. For fields like nursing and student teaching, we’ll point you in the right direction. Explore Career Development
