Questions, answered.
Do I need experience before I start?
No. You’ll need a camera (a phone works) to record videos and upload them as .mp4 files. These video assignments are required to pass the course.
How do I become an RBT?
The BACB requires all of these before you can take the RBT exam:
- Be 18 or older, with a high school diploma or equivalent
- Pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check
- Complete a 40-hour training (this course)
- Complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment after your training
- Apply to the BACB and have your application approved
This course meets the 40-hour training requirement only. Requirements can change, so check them on the BACB website ↗ before you apply.
What isn’t included?
Application fees, background checks, and the Initial Competency Assessment aren’t included. Since January 1, 2024, the BACB has required employers to complete the Initial Competency Assessment.
Who can apply for RBT certification?
Since January 1, 2026, only people who live in the United States, Canada, or Australia can apply for BACB certification. The BACB stops accepting new applications from Australia on January 1, 2027. See the BACB’s global certification page ↗ for current details.
