Before you enroll
Questions, answered.
Do I need experience before I start?
No. There are no prerequisites, though a high school diploma or GED is recommended. Check your state’s requirements before you enroll.
Already have two years of experience, or Ready to Work certificates? The provider recommends the HVAC/R Certified Technician course ↗ instead.
Which certifications does this prepare me for?
The course prepares you for these entry-level exams:
- EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification
- HVAC Excellence Employment Ready certificates (more than 20)
- NATE Ready to Work certificate
Your vouchers cover the EPA 608 exam and two HVAC Excellence Employment Ready exams (Electrical and Air Conditioning). A NATE exam voucher isn’t included.
Do I need a license?
Some states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed. Check with yours before you enroll.
Are the simulations accessible?
Not yet. The simulations are optional practice and don’t count toward your grade. Right now they aren’t screen reader or keyboard accessible, and they need a computer with a 64-bit operating system; they don’t work on phones. Accessible simulations are planned for an updated version of the course expected in 2027.
How long do I have to finish?
You have 12 months from the day you enroll. The course is self-paced, so you can finish sooner. Access usually starts within 24–48 business hours after you register.
Can I use financial aid?
Federal financial aid, such as FAFSA and Pell Grants, doesn’t cover this course. Payment plans, workforce funding, and military benefits may be options. See payment and funding options ↗.
What’s the job outlook?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of HVAC/R technicians to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 40,600 openings each year. See current pay and outlook in the Occupational Outlook Handbook ↗.
