Missouri Valley College will host the SM2Dance Dance Company based in Phoenix, Arizona from Oct. 9-13. While in Marshall, the dance company will hold a number of events on the MVC campus.

The events that will be held on the MVC campus include a Birth Story Lecture Demonstration on October 10 from 6-8 p.m. in the Malcolm Center for Student Life, light refreshments will be provided; workshops with MVC classes on October 11 from 12:15-1:30 p.m. and October 12 from 2:00-2:50 p.m.; and a Modern Dance Concert entitled BIRTH! on October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eckilson-Mabee Theatre.

Cesarean surgeries account for one third of all births in the United States. BIRTH! is a deeply personal, non-linear, auto-biographical modern dance work that tells the choreographer’s process of becoming a mother. BIRTH! tells one woman’s story, but holds a message that relates to a larger audience as it discusses how babies are born; how it affects mothers, babies and society; and why it matters.

“I am thrilled we have SM2Dance Company, and director Sara Malan-McDonald, coming to perform BIRTH! on our campus and to interact with our dancers, students and community for a week,” said Janie Morgan, professor of dance. “I hope that people will take advantage of all the events happening during the week.”

This visit from SM2Dance Company was generously funded by Jon and Dawnna Morris. All events are free and open to the public, donations are appreciated. For more information, please contact Janie Morgan at morganj@moval.edu or 660-831-4050.
