Get help

How can we help?

The fastest way to get help is a help request. It goes straight to the IT team and helps us track your issue.

Submit a help request

Problems with your account, Wi-Fi, a classroom, or a website update? Tell us what’s going on.

Reset your password

Find the password reset portal and other student tools, like Canvas, Valley Email, and Self-Service, in MyMoval.

For faculty: course sandboxes

Request a practice space to build or test course content.

Need a personal sandbox instead? Request an individual sandbox.

System status

Is it down, or is it just me?

IT updates this table when a service has an outage or slowdown. If something isn’t working and it shows as operational, submit a help request.

Computer requirements

Choosing a computer for class.

Most students do well with a laptop that meets these recommendations. MVU is a Google campus, so most classes use Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and most other programs run in a web browser.

Recommended specs

Nursing students

You need a laptop that is not a Chromebook, with modern Wi-Fi, a built-in camera, and a microphone.

Will a Mac work?

Yes. So far, we haven’t found any program that faculty require that doesn’t work on a Mac.

Will a Chromebook work?

Yes, for most students. Nursing students need a laptop that isn’t a Chromebook.

Can I use an iPad?

Yes. Install Google’s apps (Chrome, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides) for the best experience.

Can I just use my phone?

We don’t recommend it. Many classes use eBooks and online coursework, and although there’s a mobile app, doing all your coursework on a phone is very limiting.

Gaming on campus

Why your console says “Strict NAT.”

Xbox, PlayStation, and other consoles on the campus network will usually report a Strict NAT type.

What it means

With Strict NAT, you can play and chat online with people who have an Open NAT type, but you can’t host a match, and you may not be able to connect with some players.

Why we can’t change it

Hundreds of devices share MVU’s public internet addresses through network address translation (NAT), just as a home router does on a smaller scale. Consoles are designed to be the only console on a connection, so a more open NAT type isn’t possible here. UPnP and port forwarding are made for home routers and don’t work on a large network like ours.

Cybersecurity

Protect your account.

Scammers try to trick people into giving away passwords and personal information. A stolen MVU account can be used to steal money or identities, send spam, or break into other campus systems.

Phishing

Fake emails that look official, often claiming to be from an MVU office or a bank, and urging you to “log in now.” The link leads to a fake login page or installs malware. Don’t click; go to the site yourself.

Social engineering

It’s easier to trick a person than to hack a computer. Be wary of anyone who asks for your password or personal information, even if they seem trustworthy. If a message or call feels off, contact IT.

Weak or reused passwords

Attackers guess common words and names, and they try stolen passwords on other sites. Use a long, unique passphrase for your MVU account.

Public and borrowed devices

Kiosks and shared computers may capture what you type. Avoid logging in on them, and always sign out and close the browser.

Shoulder surfing

In labs, libraries, and other public spaces, watch who can see your screen and keyboard when you type a password.

Unsecured connections

On open Wi-Fi, information sent without encryption can be intercepted. Look for https:// before entering a password.

Alumni: your Google account

Since August 1, 2022, alumni accounts include Gmail only; Google Drive and other Google apps were removed. To keep files from an old account, download them or use Google Takeout.
