The work

Paralegals handle much of the work attorneys rely on: legal research, drafting contracts and pleadings, interviewing clients, and helping prepare for trial.
You can specialize in an area such as criminal, family, immigration, or real estate law. Paralegals are different from legal secretaries, whose role is mainly administrative.

Do I need experience before I start?
No. There are no prerequisites to take the course. The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) sets eligibility for the CP exam, so check its requirements before you schedule.
Can a paralegal become a lawyer?
Yes. Working as a paralegal is a strong introduction to the legal system. To become an attorney, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree, law school, and a passing score on a state bar exam.
