Help animals get the care they need.
Veterinary assistants support veterinarians and veterinary technicians. They feed, weigh, bathe, and take the temperature of animals, help give medications, clean cages, and gently restrain animals during treatment.
Many also handle front-office work, such as scheduling, check-in, billing, and after-visit care instructions.

Before you enroll
Questions, answered.
Do I need experience before I start?
No. There are no prerequisites.
What’s the difference between a veterinary assistant and a veterinary technician?
Veterinary assistants usually train through a certificate course and help with basic duties. Veterinary technicians act as the veterinarian’s nurse and need a two-year associate degree accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Working as an assistant is a good way to learn the field if you want to become a technician later.
What’s the job outlook?
See current pay and outlook for veterinary assistants in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook ↗.
