The fully online, 30-credit-hour program is built to prepare graduates for high-demand careers in the health, fitness, and performance industries, including roles as exercise physiologists, fitness and wellness coordinators, strength and conditioning specialists, exercise trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and more.

“This launch reflects months of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and dedication from an outstanding team,” said Dr. Joe Parisi, President of Missouri Valley College. “We are excited to launch a degree that not only reflects the strengths of our institution, but also meets a growing need in today’s workforce.”

According to Dr. Tom Bertoncino, Associate Dean of Health Sciences, the curriculum was intentionally designed to combine scientific knowledge with practical, career-focused application. Courses include advanced exercise physiology, advanced sports nutrition, advanced conditioning, exercise and sport psychology, exercise as medicine, tactical strength and conditioning, and much more.

“This program will be an outstanding addition to MVC’s graduate offerings,” Bertoncino said. “Exercise science has consistently been one of the most popular and fastest-growing areas of study at MVC, and this degree creates an exciting pathway for students to continue their education and advance their careers.”

Bertoncino added that the program arrives at an important time, as demand continues to rise across the sports performance, fitness, wellness, and healthcare industries. With a growing emphasis on preventative health, rehabilitation, and human performance, the new master’s degree is designed to equip graduates with workforce-relevant skills and real-world expertise that will help them stand out in a competitive and rapidly evolving field.

They were inspired by a deeply personal message from the speaker, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who received an honorary doctorate of laws degree. Mullin was a student-athlete at Missouri Valley College in his younger years, but had to leave college to take over the family business when his father became ill.

Mullin is a dedicated public servant, having also served as a U.S. senator and member of the house of representatives in Oklahoma. He is known for finding common ground across the aisle on behalf of the American people.

Also honored at the commencement ceremony were the winners of the Charles L. Bacon Distinguished Service Award, Julius Kruger and Isabela Harp Gonzalez.

Kruger completed his degree in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration. He has been a member of the Honors College, spent seven semesters on the Dean’s List, been named an NAIA Scholar Athlete, and was a four-year starter on the MVC soccer team.

Gonzalez graduated with a double major in marketing and business administration. She was on the Dean’s List from Fall 2022 through spring 2025, and was a player on the MVC softball team. She worked as a student ambassador and was an intern in the athletic department.

The John McCallum Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dean Kelley McKay Fuemmeler, and the Staff Excellence Award went to Brandy Schulte.

“Graduation is like the Super Bowl,” said President Joe Parisi. “We’re sending these graduates out into the world to get jobs after our faculty and staff has worked to inspire them, shape them, mold them, and encourage them. It’s the best day of the year.”

Under the KCU Partner Program agreement, those who apply and are selected will attend KCU as full-time first-year students following their junior year at Missouri Valley after completing specific coursework. Students receive their bachelor’s degree from MVC after the first year at KCU.

For a doctorate in clinical psychology, Honors students at MVC will be selected based upon undergraduate academic performance, demonstration of clinical experience, community service, undergraduate and high school activities, recommendations by MVC faculty, and knowledge and dedication to the field of psychology. Those pursuing the PsyD in the Partner Program will matriculate to KCU as full-time first-year students following conferral of their undergraduate degree and after completing specific coursework.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Missouri Valley College President Joe Parisi. “KCU has a wonderful mix of global and rural students, and is the perfect fit for us.”

Honors College Dean Christopher Libby will work closely with his students to and outline the MVC/KCU Partnership for those who may be a good fit. Selection is based on a variety of factors, including ACT score, freshman year academic performance, community services and high school activities, and knowledge and dedication to osteopathic medicine or dental medicine.

The agreement was signed October 27 at KCU by Parisi, MVC Vice President for Academic Affairs Cynthia Bice, and KCU President Marc Hahn.

Now the sophomore from O’Fallon, Mo wants to figure out how to take the class again.

It all goes back to a well-liked and trusted faculty member, Dr. Michael Kateman.

The class is called Voices of Arrow Rock Production, and it is built around a theatre series called The Voices of Arrow Rock. This year’s class produced The Great Protector, and Nunn-Faron was the stage manager. She and her classmates, Steven Tetteh, Ethan Quarchioni, and Patrick Hauschildt teamed up in class and wrote a grant through the Buckner Foundation to support the production.

“It was an incredible experience,” said Nunn-Faron. “I’ll be the director next time.”

New freshmen and transfer students grew 12 percent for the 2023 academic year, and returning students grew by six percent over the prior year.

The increases coincide with the arrival of Missouri Valley’s 14^th president, Dr. Joe Parisi, who spent the largest part of his career growing enrollment at Midwest area colleges. Parisi said he is proud of his admissions, athletics, and retention teams “who did the heavy lifting to make this growth a reality.

“So many colleges across the country are not seeing great numbers this fall,” Parisi said. “We have a community, and a region, that is showing how much they value a Missouri Valley College education.”

Parisi said there were many new features that attracted the new class, including big changes in student services, where the college spent over a $1 million on software that streamlines the enrollment, financial aid, and housing signup experiences.

Another key factor to the encouraging report is Missouri Valley College’s new online presence, where several popular degree programs were added.

All events along the route are an open invitation to the people of the towns and cities Amal is visiting. Some of the organizations and institutions that will share their unique vantage point of the U.S. narrative and take part in the journey include: national and local cultural institutions, theaters, community groups, government bodies, arts, civic society, faith groups and humanitarian organizations. 

Missouri Valley’s event will take place between Baity Hall and the Tech Centers and will consist of a brief multimedia performance developed and performed by MVC faculty and students under the guidance of Professor of Theatre, Harold Hynick..

“Amal stands for unity and hope, and we couldn’t impart this message without the hundreds of partners, large and small, coming together to support us as we embark on this journey,” said The Walk Productions Artistic Director Amir Nizar Zuabi. “Each artist, organization and institution has a story to tell about their unique slice of American history and culture, and is inviting Amal and all Americans to learn about what makes this country’s heart beat.”

“We’re overwhelmed by the outpouring of interest that we’ve received from partners who wish to welcome Amal to their communities,” said The Walk Productions Producer David Lan. “These partners have not only supported on-the-ground efforts to create memorable in-person experiences, but also lent their support to our off-route efforts through ‘Amal From Afar,’ which Americans from all 50 states can engage with during the journey.”

Starting in Boston, Mass. on September 7 and culminating on November 5 in San Diego, CA, the journey will take Amal through the nation’s capital, the Midwest, the South and along the Southern border. 

Amal Walks Across America is produced by The Walk Productions in association with Handspring Puppet Company, which also guided Amal’s journey through her initial 5,000-mile walk across Europe in 2021 and through all five boroughs of New York City in 2022 in partnership with St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Since the beginning of her journey, Amal has been welcomed in communities across the globe at various artistic-led events that are authentic and meaningful to the local people she meets. 

Amal is inspired by a character in Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson’s play The Jungle, about a refugee camp in Calais, France. The Walk 2021 was a co-production with Good Chance Theatre.

A reception will be held for the release of Dr. Petrov’s book at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Murrell Library Reading Room on the Missouri Valley College campus. There will be a brief overview of the project by the author, an informal question and answer period and a book signing at the reception. Refreshments will be provided.

In 1863, Protestant missionaries established Robert College in Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, holding the distinction of being the pioneer American college abroad. In manycases, the American educators at Robert College understood the field of education as a superior tool for mission.

The book brings into conversation the convergence of the Protestant mission movement in the Ottoman Empire with the diverse tones of American efforts for providing education and assisting of the economic and social progress. The story of Robert College in Constantinople is a fascinating account for examining the influence of United States foreign affairs and culture on various aspects of society in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ottoman Empire.

Main, 33, starts his new position July 5. He will work closely with MVC leadership to advance strategic priorities, respond to opportunities for enrollment growth, identify and support projects, and build relationships with stakeholders.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to work with a place that has a great growth trajectory and focuses on putting students first,” Main said. “There are some very high standards and expectations, and I’m hitting the ground running.”

Main has experience in enrollment growth and project work from his time as emerging sports coordinator at Central Methodist University, where he built eight strong programs. He also served as admissions representative there, and head men’s and women’s golf coach.

Originally from Prestwick, Scotland, Main also has expertise in federal financial aid scholarship management. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Lindenwood University, and his master’s degree in education from Central Methodist University.

Missouri Valley College has welcomed a new admissions counselor whose talents will bring her into the classroom as well. Reese Fraley will recruit students in the admissions office, but will also teach dance at MVC.

Fraley, of Sedalia, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, where she majored in modern dance performance. Her styles include modern technique and ballet,  jazz, pom and hip hop on an NFL cheer training team. She said she plans to focus on the foundation of dance technique, while allowing students to explore their own creativity as artists.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work at Missouri Valley,” Fraley said. “I was inspired by Dr. (Joe) Parisi’s vision to grow both fine arts and the college.”

Fraley, who was married in March, grew up in Sedalia, where she teaches dance at Studio A Conservatory. She and her husband, Seth, have two Australian Shepherds.
