The day showcased Valley on one of Missouri’s biggest stages, highlighted by Missouri Valley University President Joe Parisi throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and the University’s Cheer and Dance team performing on the field at Busch Stadium.

For Parisi, a St. Louis native, the opportunity carried both personal and professional significance.

“Growing up in St. Louis and Missouri, and being part of Cardinals and Royals baseball, is more than a tradition—it’s a part of who we are,” Parisi said. “Generations of Missouri families have shared memories at Busch and Kauffman Stadium, passed down their love of the game and carried amazing traditions with an American pastime. To have the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Busch Stadium for the St. Louis Cardinals was an incredibly meaningful moment for me—not only personally, but as president of Missouri Valley University.”

Parisi said the opportunity was particularly special as Missouri Valley begins its new era as a university.

“It was especially meaningful to represent Missouri Valley University and our entire constituency on such a special stage,” Parisi said. “Our university is built on the same values that make Missouri special—tradition, community, honor, perseverance and a belief in bringing people together.”

Standing on the field, Parisi said he was reminded that the moment represented far more than one individual. “I was representing our students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, friends and all those who believe in the mission and future of Missouri Valley University,” he said.

“For me, Saturday was a beautiful intersection of where I came from and where I have the privilege of serving today. To throw out the first pitch at a Cardinals game, surrounded by the traditions I grew up with, while representing Missouri Valley University and its entire constituency, was an honor I will always treasure. It was a moment that connected personal history, university valor and the shared spirit of Missouri—and one I know will hold a special place in my heart. Valley Will Roll!”

Missouri Valley University Cheer and Dance also took center stage Saturday, performing for Cardinals fans on the field at Busch Stadium. The 58-member cheer team delivered a zero-deduction performance, commonly referred to in competitive cheer as “hitting zero.”

“Saturday was a great day, and our team had a wonderful performance,” said assistant coach Rylee Mills. “The team worked hard to put the routine out there for Cardinals fans and give them a great performance. Saturday meant a lot to us. Performing on the Cardinals field and on that stage is a great start for the new era of MVU.”

For Missouri Valley University Dance Coach Kristen Revis, the performance marked an especially meaningful milestone for the University’s Spirit Teams. “Yesterday was an incredible day in Spirit Team history,” Revis said. “Not only did we have our first appearance together as Missouri Valley University, but we also had our very first performance on the field at Busch Stadium! Our Cheer and Dance teams did an absolutely fantastic job, and we could not be more proud of how they represented MVU on such a special day.”

Revis said the opportunity was about more than the performance itself—it was a chance for current student-athletes to help establish traditions that will continue for years to come. “These are the moments that the athletes can look back at as alumni and say, ‘I started that tradition,’” Revis said. “We cannot wait to see what else the season has in store for us. Valley Will Roll!”

With the Cardinals performance behind them, Mills, Revis and the teams are now looking ahead to another milestone—the first Missouri Valley University home football game of the season on Saturday, September 12.

Kujawa, Director of the Viking Sports Network and an adjunct instructor in Missouri Valley’s Mass Communication department, will be honored during the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame’s Enshrinement in Columbia on Sunday, October 25, at the Wyndham Executive Center-Columbia Mall. A reception will begin at noon, followed by the induction ceremony at 1 p.m.

For nearly two decades, Kujawa has been a familiar voice to Viking fans, broadcasting Missouri Valley athletic events both at home and on the road. Since joining Valley in 2008, he has also helped prepare the next generation of communicators through courses including radio production, sports reporting and media law.

“Ken’s voice has become synonymous with Viking athletics,” said MVU President Joe Parisi. “He reflects the excitement of Viking athletics, and personifies what we are all about.”

Before coming to Missouri Valley, Kujawa spent 40 years working in commercial radio stations across South Dakota, Nebraska and Missouri. The final years of his commercial radio career were spent with the Shepherd Group of radio stations based in Moberly, Missouri.

During that time, Kujawa served as the play-by-play voice of the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds, building a reputation as a trusted and recognizable voice in Missouri sports. His contributions were previously recognized with induction into the Moberly Area Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame announced Kujawa among a Class of 2026 that includes accomplished coaches, athletes, administrators, officials, teams and sports organizations from throughout Mid-Missouri. The class also includes Norm Stewart’s 1994 Elite Eight Missouri men’s basketball team, longtime coaches and athletic administrators, and several distinguished high school and collegiate programs.

President Joe Parisi announced that the Missouri Valley College Board of Trustees has approved a historic transition: Missouri Valley College will become Missouri Valley University.

For more than 135 years, Missouri Valley has educated generations of students through personalized education, dedicated faculty and staff, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to student success. The transition to Missouri Valley University marks a significant milestone in that history while positioning the institution for continued growth and opportunity.

This is more than a new name. It is an investment in Valley’s future.

The decision follows 18 months of research, strategic planning, discussion, and engagement with faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees, and community members. The university designation reflects the institution’s continued evolution and its commitment to meeting the changing needs of today’s students and tomorrow’s workforce.

As Missouri Valley University, the institution will continue expanding opportunities through:

• Broader academic pathways and new programs aligned with workforce needs
• Expanded graduate education opportunities
• Emphasized partnerships with employers and community organizations
• Increased opportunities for research and experiential learning
• Expanded online learning opportunities
• Career-focused experiences that prepare students for life beyond the classroom

“The transition from college to university is a visible milestone that reflects stronger and expanded graduate academic offerings, deeper partnerships, clearer pathways, and a greater impact for students and communities,” said President Joe Parisi.

The transition is supported by the Higher Learning Commission, which has endorsed Missouri Valley University as a nonprofit private university, maintaining the institution’s continuous accreditation.

A University Built on the Valley Experience

While the name is changing, the heart of Missouri Valley remains the same.

Valley’s mission, updated and approved by the Board of Trustees in May, reflects our commitment: Personalized education for life skills and career success. Our goal is simple, to grow thoughtfully while preserving what makes Valley, Valley.

Professors know students by name. Coaches, advisors, mentors, administrators, and staff members walk alongside students through challenges and successes. Those personal connections will remain central to Missouri Valley University.

The institution will grow thoughtfully without losing the close-knit community that makes Valley distinctive.

The transition also will not happen overnight. Signage, apparel, promotional materials, campus branding, and other physical elements will be updated strategically over time as the university moves forward responsibly and remains a good steward of its resources. Iconic campus landmarks, including the columns and archway, will remain as part of Valley’s history and identity.

That history is also being preserved in the Alumni Recognition Center and Museum on the second floor of Baity Hall, where generations of Valley stories and accomplishments are celebrated.

Honoring the Past While Building the Future

Missouri Valley University is joining a broader evolution taking place across higher education. Within the Heart of America Athletic Conference, 14 institutions have previously transitioned from college to university, including Central Methodist, Graceland, MidAmerica Nazarene, Evangel, Lindenwood, Avila, Grand View, William Penn, Clarke, Mount Mercy, Park, Missouri Baptist, William Woods, and St. Ambrose.

That momentum is reflected in the growing support of the Valley community. Over the last three years, Missouri Valley’s unduplicated donor headcount has increased by 476 percent. A 2019 economic impact study also found that the institution generated more than $23 million in economic activity through student, employee, and direct institutional spending.

These numbers represent more than growth. They reflect a community that believes in Missouri Valley and its future.

Nickel brings a diverse background in marketing, communications, education, and technology operations. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Marketing and has built her career on creating meaningful connections, developing strategic communications, and helping organizations tell compelling stories that strengthen their communities.

Prior to joining Missouri Valley College, Nickel worked with Heartland Business Systems, where she coordinated complex projects, streamlined operational processes, and collaborated across departments to support organizational growth and client success. She also operated a marketing and communications consulting business, helping organizations develop strategic marketing initiatives, execute digital campaigns, refresh their brands, and leverage data-driven insights to increase visibility and audience engagement. 

Before transitioning into the technology sector, she spent three years as a Marketing teacher and DECA advisor at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri. During her tenure, she guided students to success at district, state, and national competitions while fostering hands-on learning experiences in marketing, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

“Kassie brings an outstanding combination of marketing expertise, leadership, and educational experience,” said President Joe Parisi. “She understands the power of authentic storytelling and strategic communication, and I’m confident she will play an important role in elevating Missouri Valley College’s brand while sharing the remarkable stories of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.”

As Director of Marketing and Communications, Nickel will lead the College’s branding, public relations, digital communications, social media strategy, and institutional storytelling efforts. Working collaboratively with campus leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners, she will help strengthen the College’s visibility, support enrollment and advancement initiatives, and celebrate the achievements of the Viking community.

The hybrid, 76-credit-hour program combines online coursework, hands-on training in Missouri Valley College’s state-of-the-art simulation laboratories, and supervised clinical experiences at approved healthcare facilities. Graduates will be prepared to pursue certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and enter the workforce as skilled diagnostic medical sonographers.

This launch reflects the continued growth of our health sciences programs and our commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers that directly impact the lives of others. The healthcare industry continues to face significant workforce needs, and this program creates another pathway for students to enter a rewarding profession while serving communities across Missouri and beyond.

The program will be led by Kelley McDonald, a veteran sonography educator and practitioner with more than two decades of experience in diagnostic imaging, healthcare management, and sonography education. McDonald previously served as Clinical Coordinator for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Washburn University, where she played a key role in curriculum development, clinical education, accreditation efforts, and student success. She holds credentials as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), and a Registered Radiologic Technologist. Her extensive experience in both clinical practice and higher education positions her to provide students with a strong foundation in sonography and patient-centered care.

The curriculum is intentionally designed to balance classroom instruction, laboratory training, and real-world clinical experience. Students will study sonographic physics and instrumentation, abdominal sonography, obstetric and gynecological imaging, vascular sonography, cross-sectional anatomy, and advanced clinical practice while developing the technical and critical-thinking skills required in modern healthcare settings.

The program represents an important addition to Missouri Valley College’s growing portfolio of healthcare degrees. Diagnostic medical sonography is one of the fastest-growing professions in healthcare, and employers continue to seek highly trained professionals who can provide accurate diagnostic imaging and exceptional patient care. Graduates will be well-positioned to meet that demand through a curriculum focused on both technical proficiency and clinical excellence.

Diagnostic medical sonographers play a vital role in patient care by using ultrasound technology to assist physicians in diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of medical conditions. Sonographers may work in hospitals, physician offices, outpatient clinics, specialty imaging centers, and other healthcare environments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for diagnostic medical sonographers are projected to grow significantly over the coming decade, driven by increased demand for non-invasive diagnostic procedures and advances in medical imaging technology.

The fully online, 30-credit-hour program is built to prepare graduates for high-demand careers in the health, fitness, and performance industries, including roles as exercise physiologists, fitness and wellness coordinators, strength and conditioning specialists, exercise trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and more.

“This launch reflects months of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and dedication from an outstanding team,” said Dr. Joe Parisi, President of Missouri Valley College. “We are excited to launch a degree that not only reflects the strengths of our institution, but also meets a growing need in today’s workforce.”

According to Dr. Tom Bertoncino, Associate Dean of Health Sciences, the curriculum was intentionally designed to combine scientific knowledge with practical, career-focused application. Courses include advanced exercise physiology, advanced sports nutrition, advanced conditioning, exercise and sport psychology, exercise as medicine, tactical strength and conditioning, and much more.

“This program will be an outstanding addition to MVC’s graduate offerings,” Bertoncino said. “Exercise science has consistently been one of the most popular and fastest-growing areas of study at MVC, and this degree creates an exciting pathway for students to continue their education and advance their careers.”

Bertoncino added that the program arrives at an important time, as demand continues to rise across the sports performance, fitness, wellness, and healthcare industries. With a growing emphasis on preventative health, rehabilitation, and human performance, the new master’s degree is designed to equip graduates with workforce-relevant skills and real-world expertise that will help them stand out in a competitive and rapidly evolving field.

They were inspired by a deeply personal message from the speaker, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who received an honorary doctorate of laws degree. Mullin was a student-athlete at Missouri Valley College in his younger years, but had to leave college to take over the family business when his father became ill.

Mullin is a dedicated public servant, having also served as a U.S. senator and member of the house of representatives in Oklahoma. He is known for finding common ground across the aisle on behalf of the American people.

Also honored at the commencement ceremony were the winners of the Charles L. Bacon Distinguished Service Award, Julius Kruger and Isabela Harp Gonzalez.

Kruger completed his degree in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration. He has been a member of the Honors College, spent seven semesters on the Dean’s List, been named an NAIA Scholar Athlete, and was a four-year starter on the MVC soccer team.

Gonzalez graduated with a double major in marketing and business administration. She was on the Dean’s List from Fall 2022 through spring 2025, and was a player on the MVC softball team. She worked as a student ambassador and was an intern in the athletic department.

The John McCallum Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dean Kelley McKay Fuemmeler, and the Staff Excellence Award went to Brandy Schulte.

“Graduation is like the Super Bowl,” said President Joe Parisi. “We’re sending these graduates out into the world to get jobs after our faculty and staff has worked to inspire them, shape them, mold them, and encourage them. It’s the best day of the year.”
