Mission: The Missouri Valley College Counseling Center supports the academic mission of the college by providing services and programs designed to help students maintain their emotional well-being in order to achieve their educational success. Our mission is inspired by the values of the compassion, diversity, social responsibility, integrity, and accountability of individual students while also focusing on the milieu of the entire campus community.

Q: What does it cost to see the campus counselor?
A: Counseling services are free for students attending MVC.
Q: Are counseling services confidential, even if my parents call?
A: Yes, all services are confidential for students 18 years and older. No information may be shared (even with parents) without appropriate written documentation and release which specifies what information is to be released and to whom, except in cases of medical emergency or other situations where the counselor, in the exercise of her judgment, deems release of such information necessary or advisable. The law in the State of Missouri mandates that information be appropriately shared if a student is in imminent harm to him/herself or to others, when there is an indication of child or elder abuse, or as required by a court of law. However, the counselor is able to receive information from others, including parents, and can provide consultation services as questions and concerns present.
Q: What can I expect when I come in for counseling?
A: During the initial meeting, students will fill out a brief information form and discuss a course of action which may include continuing therapy on campus or receiving a referral to an off-campus therapist. Most sessions occur on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with sessions lasting approximately 50 minutes in duration depending on the need. The Counseling Center encourages students to come in and talk, even if they are not sure that counseling is what they need.
Q: Who can benefit from counseling?
A: Counseling is not just for those who are suffing from serious psychological problems. All of us have times in our lives when we could beenfit from talking with a caring, professional listener. It is also common during adjustment to college life that self-doubts may arise or stress may seem to be getting the best of you; this is where the Counseling Center may be able to assist you.
Q: What is counseling?
A: Counseling is a voluntary relationship in which a professionally trained counselor meets with the student to discuss some issue or conflict. Counseling is a process by which change is sought through the expression of thoughts and emotions in a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental forum.
Q: How does counseling work?
A: During the first meeting, you will meet with a counselor and complete an initial intake. The purpose of this first meeting is to provide a good fit for continued services. You will be asked to fill out some paperwork and answer some questions. Once the assessment is complete, a recommendation will be made and discussed with you.
