The MVC Student Affairs Office strives to enhance the collegiate atmosphere by providing safe and comfortable on-campus residences and trained student leaders to aid in academic and personal growth, ensuring success of the student community. To facilitate this goal, we are currently seeking undergraduate Hall Directors to supervise our on-campus residential community.

Job Description:
A Hall Director is a full-time student employee and an integral member of the Residential Life Staff of the Student Affairs Office. Hall Directors are managed and supervised by the Coordinator of Housing and Residential Life and the Dean of Students. The Hall Director position is based on a two-semester term. A formal evaluation will be conducted at the end of the first semester. This current opening is for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Hall Directors live in specifically designated rooms or apartments for maximum supervision of residence halls. Hall Directors are responsible for 50-275 residents and manage a staff of 2-8 Resident Assistants. The Hall Director position is considered to be their principal non-academic activity. It may be necessary for Hall Directors to limit extra-curricular activities in order to fulfill their duties.

Requirements for workload may vary according to the size and classification of each residential area. Hall Directors will be responsible for scheduling “on-duty” hours for their Resident Assistants. Depending on the size of their staff, Hall Directors may also be responsible for taking “on-duty” shifts, but are expected to spend time in their individual areas outside of these scheduled hours. This time may include handling emergencies, counseling residents at any hour, attending and/or facilitating evening activities, etc. Hall Directors are always expected to maintain high visibility within their assigned building.

Responsibilites:

  • Work with the Dean of Students, Coordinator of Housing and Residential Life, and Resident Assistant Staff to develop a residential environment that supports the academic mission of the College and that balances the need for sleep, study and community development.
  • Represent and support the Student Affairs Office and the College in interactions with students, faculty, parents and guests.
  • Manage the overall operations of a residential facility, including staff scheduling, supervision and evaluation.

  • Know, understand, follow and be able to explain all College and Student Affairs policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and seasonal hall meetings to impart crucial information and address hall issues.
  • Attend weekly Hall Director meetings directed by the Coordinator of Housing and Residential Life.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the selected residential area.
  • Develop a supportive and inclusive residential community.
  • Respond to student needs and concerns, resolve issues, answer questions and clarify policy.
  • Appropriately confront residents when necessary to help them become responsible for their behavior.
  • Be able to perform and direct all emergency procedures.
  • Participate in a rotation of 24 hour on-call coverage during the academic year, including College break periods.
  • Return to campus at the required times to attend training sessions and attend all assigned meetings, staff development and in-service sessions during the course of the academic year.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, Student Affairs Office and Counseling Center regarding students of concern who live in the residence hall community. Advise, refer and follow up with these students as appropriate.
  • Respect the confidentiality of communications from students and staff by withholding sensitive information from all those who do not have a professional need to know.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Housing and Residential Life with building operations of residential facilities including opening and closing of halls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or Coordinator of Housing and Residential Life.

Qualifications:

  • Hall Directors must have no less than one year of prior Residential Life Staff experience.
  • Hall Directors must have and maintain a 2.0 semester and 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.
  • Applicants must have few or no violations of disciplinary policy or procedure.
  • All applicants must report to campus for Residential Life Staff training no later than Wednesday, August 1st.
