MVC Art Student to Host Senior Art Show

Posted May 2, 2017

MVC Senior Cassandra Hemeyer of the graphic design arts department will host a solo art exhibition entitled “Mad Props.” The show will be on display from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., May 1- May 5  in the Vern Nester Gallery located in Baity Hall on the MVC campus.

"When I step back and look at my artwork, the feeling that I get is familiarity; I tend to photograph things that are familiar to me and this is something I have learned about myself and have started exploring more deeply,” Hemeyer said.  “I am fascinated that I can take things from my everyday life and turn them into artwork. Artwork worthy of discussion, worthy of awe or even perhaps a place on someone’s wall. I am learning every day how to look at the world around me differently and how to use the tools available to me to make art. My work thus far has mostly been limited to my immediate family and friends, but I have been branching out to encompass my community and other places and people that have meaning in my life. When I started my career as an art student, I had no idea what I wanted to make art about, so I started with what I knew, people and places that I was familiar with. I encourage others that are intimidated by ‘the big blank canvas’ to just start with what you know. It’s amazing how everyday things can make a beautiful piece of art.”

Hemeyer is a Marshall native and strives to be a part of her community. She spends her time working on design materials for various businesses around town, and for local committees and events like the upcoming Solar Eclipse and Annual Foothills Fest. Hemeyer also photographs Marshall residents. When she is not working on her computer, she is spending time with her four year old son, Kai.

A closing reception for the collection will be held on May 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Vern Nester Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
