Viking Softball Splits at MidAmerica Nazarene

Marshall, Mo. (April 25, 2017)- The Missouri Valley College softball team traveled to MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University for a Heart doubleheader Tuesday in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Olathe, Kan. The Vikings fell in the opener, 8-6, but split the doubleheader with a 9-3 win in game two.

Game one opened with Junior First Baseman Mackenzie Bilger (Boise, Idaho) reaching first on a walk in the first inning. Senior Second Baseman Kaya Naiwi (Nanakuli, Hawaii) later singled and Bilger advanced to second. Missouri Valley loaded the bases thanks to Junior Rightfielder Kaila DeWitt (San Diego, Calif.), who reached first on the fielder's choice. Freshman Leftfielder Madison Finley (Papillion, Neb.) hit a single and Bilger scored. Later in the inning, Sophomore Catcher Kelly James (San Carlos, Calif.) allowed Naiwi and DeWitt to score with a single. Junior Centerfielder Jessica Townsend (Dekalb, Ill.) then singled to shallow right and Finley scored. Senior Shortstop Courtney Carl (Burlington, Iowa) singled to short and the Vikings loaded the bases. Bilger helped MVC to add two more runs in the first inning with a single, allowing James and Townsend to score. MNU started the bottom of the first inning loading their bases. A Pioneer later hit a home run, and to cut the MVC advantage to 6-3. MidAmerica Nazarene hit a single in the bottom of the second, but the runner was left on base. MVC putted two Vikings on base in the top of the third, with singles from Townsend and Carl, but left the runners stranded. The Pioneers came back in the bottom of the third, using four base hits to score four runs and hold a 7-6 lead. Missouri Valley had one hit by Naiwi in the top of the fourth but was unable to bring the runner home. The Vikings threatened in the fifth, as Freshman Designated Player Sara Jones (Palmdale, Calif.) doubled and MVC later loaded bases. However, MNU got out of the jam and kept MVC from scoring. In the bottom of the fifth, MidAmerica Nazarene homered and the Pioneers hold a 8-6 lead. Senior Pitcher Bethany Chamblee (Sardis City, Ala.) worked a strikeout to end the fifth inning. Junior Third Baseman Autumn Hughes (Savannah, Mo.) started the sixth inning with a single, but did not to reach home. In the bottom of the sixth, Chamblee worked a strikeout and MNU was unable to add to their lead. The Vikings could not put anyone on base in the seventh, and fell, 8-6.

Townsend finished with three hits, one RBI and one run scored, while Naiwi added two hits and one run scored. Carl finished with three hits. Bilger, DeWitt, Finley and James score one run each. Chamblee went two innings, giving up zero hits and zero runs, with two strikeouts.

Missouri Valley took early control of the second game in the first inning, loading the bases, as Bilger was reached first after a hit-by-pitch, and Hughes and Naiwi hitting back-to-back singles. DeWitt singled to center, letting Bilger score the first run of the game. Finley reached on a walk and Hughes scored. Jones later singled to deep left and Naiwi and Dewitt scored. Then, James hit a homerun, allowing Finley and Jones to score, to give Missouri Valley a 7-0 lead. MidAmerica Nazarene tried to shorten the deficit in the bottom of the first with two hits, but both runners were left on base. The Vikings putted two runners on base in the second inning, after Naiwi and Finely reached first on a walk. However, the Vikings were unable to bring both runners home. Evangel came back in the bottom of the second with a single, but MVC kept the Pioneers scoreless. In the third, Carl singled to second, but was left on base. MNU cut their deficit to 7-1 in the bottom of the third. Chamblee worked a strikeout to end the inning, leaving one Pioneer on base. The Vikings loaded bases in the top of the fourth, as DeWitt and Jones singled, and Finley reached first on a Pioneer’s bobble. However, MVC was unable to bring those runners home. In the bottom of the fourth, MNU hit a single and the runner later advanced to second on a stolen base. The Pioneers singled again, but Chamblee worked a strikeout to end the inning. The Vikings used a single by Bilger to score, after a sacrifice bunt from Hughes, going into the sixth holding a 8-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, MidAmerica Nazarene cut their deficit to 8-3, helped by a double and a single. Chumblee left two on base with a strikeout. Missouri Valley added to their lead in the seventh, as Bilger homered over the center field fence. The Pioneers were unable to put anyone on base in the seventh, and the Vikings preserved the 9-3 win.

Jones finished with three hits, two RBI’s and one run, Bilger added two hits and two runs. DeWitt finished with two hits, one RBI and one run. Hughes, Naiwi, Finley, James and Carl added a run each. Chamblee pitched the complete game, giving up eleven hits, three runs, with three strikeouts.

The split moves Missouri Valley to 27-21 overall and 17-17 in the Heart. MidAmerica Nazarene is now 26-18 on the season and 17-14 in conference play.

Next up for the Viking softball team is a home doubleheader Benedictine (Kan.) College, Thursday at 1 p.m., at Indian Foothills Park-Lyon Bowl.
