Viking Baseball Falls in Road Doubleheader at Evangel

Marshall, Mo. (April 24, 2017)- The Missouri Valley College Baseball team played a second road doubleheader in two days Monday for a Heart of America Athletic Conference series with Evangel (Mo.) University.  The Vikings fell in the first game 7-4, then fell late in a close game two, 5-4.


Game one started with Evangel taking the lead scoring two runs in the first inning. The Crusaders got a single to third, before a two run homer sailed over the fence to give Evangel the 2-0 lead. Missouri Valley responded at the top of the second with a hit from Senior Infielder Jeremy Shull (Kansas City, Mo.), who was able to score when Senior Outfielder Bryce Burdette (Frontnec, Kan.) hit a double down the right-field line. Burdette then scored when Junior Second Baseman Kyler Hecker (Eatonville, Wash.) tripled to deep center. Hecker was then left on base. Sophomore Centerfielder Lucas Jacobi (Granby, Ct.) and Senior Shortstop Cody Price (Boise, Idaho). Got hits in the third inning, but Jacobi got caught stealing, and Price was out advancing in a double play from Evangel. At the bottom of the fourth the Crusaders scored two runs from three hits, three runners were left on base. The game remained 4-2 for the next couple of innings until Evangel were able to score three runs at the bottom of the sixth. At the top of the seventh, Missouri Valley scored two runs when Jacobi tripled to deep left-center, allowing Senior Outfielder Dario Marquez (Miami, Fla.), who was pinch running for Senior Catcher Turner Herbek (Pacific, Mo.), to score. Jacobi then scored after a wild pitch from the Evangel pitcher. Missouri Valley were unable to make a comeback and fell, 7-4.


Leading Missouri Valley was Shull who had one run from three hits. Jacobi had one run from two hits, while Burdette had one run from one hit.


Game two started with Missouri Valley getting hits from Jacobi, who was then picked off, and Burdette who doubled to deep left, but was left on base. At the top of the second, Herbek singled up the middle, and Marquez advanced on the Evangel’s passed ball, after striking out. Both were left on base. Evangel took the lead with a homer over the center field fence at the bottom of the second. Missouri Valley then responded in the third inning, when Jacobi reached base on the pitchers misplayed grounder, Price then doubled down the left-field line which allowed Jacobi to advance to third base, he then scored after Burdette was grounded out. Shull then singled to left and Price advanced to second, Price was able to score, but Shull was forced out, and one Viking was left on base. In the fourth inning, Herbek singled with Junior Outfielder Manny Becerra (San Carlos, Venezuela) pinch running for him. After a sac-bunt, Becerra advanced to second, Jacobi then got a hit, Becerra scored but Jacobi was caught stealing. Evangel responded with a run at the bottom of the fourth, making the score 3-2. The Crusaders tied the game up in the fifth inning, but Missouri Valley were able to retake the lead at the top of the sixth when Herbek scored. After the Vikings failed to score in seventh inning, Evangel got two runs from three hits, and Missouri Valley fell at the bottom of the seventh, 5-4.


Leading the Vikings was Herbek who scored once from three hits. Jacobi got one run from two hits. Senior Pitcher Mike Simanek (Oakley, Calif.) picked up the loss, after pitching five innings with eight hits and three earned runs.


The pair of losses drop Missouri Valley to 16-31 overall and 6-22 in the Heart.  Evangel improves to 27-23 on the season and 14-16 in conference play.

Up next, the Viking baseball team plays a doubleheader at Central Methodist (Mo.) University in Fayette, Mo., Thursday and Friday.
