Men's Lacrosse Win KCAC Championship

The No. 1 Ranked Missouri Valley College Men’s Lacrosse Team travelled to Leavenworth, KS to play against the University of St. Mary in the KCAC Postseason Tournament Championship game. The Vikings trailed early, but pulled away to win 15-8. With the win, Missouri Valley claimed the KCAC Championship and earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Invitational Tournament.


Missouri Valley found themselves trailing early in the first quarter when USM took a 1-0 lead with just under five minutes played. The Vikings tied the game up less than a minute later when Junior Midfielder Carson Brezinski (Edmonton, Alberta) scored with an assist from Sophomore Attacker Jack Smith (Austin, Texas). A couple of minutes later Missouri Valley took the lead through Junior Midfielder Owen Sorobey (Winnipeg, Canada) who got an assist from Freshman Midfielder Aaron Longley (Manchester, England) to make it 2-1. Junior Attacker Greg Ferone (Orlando, Fla.) made it 3-1 less than a minute later. Goals from Sorobey, Brezinski and Freshman Midfielder Tyler Wilkinson (Driftwood, Texas) saw Missouri Valley end the first quarter leading 6-1.


The Vikings came out fast in the second quarter and added to their lead when Barnes scored from a Sorobey assist, 30 seconds later Ferone scored from a Brezinski assist to make it 8-1. USM scored shortly after, but Missouri Valley responded around five minutes later with another goal from Ferone, assisted by Wilkinson. USM managed to scored twice before halftime, but Missouri Valley went into halftime leading 9-4.


St. Mary’s scored twice in just over a minute in the third quarter to shorten the Viking lead to just two goals. Missouri Valley responded through Barnes who got an assist from Sorobey. USM scored again, before Barnes scored two goals in 30 seconds to give MVC a 12-7 lead. Wilkinson scored for the Vikings moments later with an assist from Smith, as the third quarter ended with Missouri Valley leading 13-7.


St. Mary’s scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but Missouri Valley were able to pull away with goals from Barnes and Smith, as the Vikings won, 15-8.


Leading the way for the Vikings was Barnes who scored five goals and added an assist. Ferone scored three goals, and Sorobey scored two and assisted two. Freshman goalkeeper Austin Degross (Apopka, Fla.) made eight saves in the win.


Missouri Valley move to 13-1 with the win. St. Mary drop to 8-8 overall with the loss.
