Viking Men's Volleyball Falls to Missouri Baptist at National Invitational

Marshall, Mo. (April 20, 2017)- The No. 8 Missouri Valley College men’s volleyball team played in the pool play of the 2017 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational Thursday morning in St. Louis, Mo. The Vikings played No. 2 Missouri Baptist University, and fell by scores of 20-25, 17-25, 20-25.

Game one started with Missouri Baptist taking the first point, but later added a point to Missouri Valley’s score from an error, tying the game at 1-1. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead, but the Vikings responded with a kill from Senior Middle Blocker Mohamed Diyani (El Jadida, Morocco) and a block by both Sophomore Outside Hitter Luis Garate (Guatire, Venezuela) and Diyani. Missouri Baptist came back winning five-straight points, holding a 7-3 lead. The Vikings took the next point helped by a kill from Diyani. Two kills by Sophomore Outside Hitter Ivailo Enev (Sofia, Bulgaria) and a kill by Junior Setter Andrea Maggio (Vasto, Italy) added points to the Vikings score. However, the Spartans later took three-straight points, holding a 13-9 lead. Missouri Valley responded with three-straight points shortening the deficit to 13-12, helped by two straight-kills from Maggio and a Spartan error. Missouri Baptist took the next two points of the game, but Garate, with a kill, added a point to the Vikings score. The Spartans won the next two points of the game, holding a 17-13 lead. A kill by Maggio helped Missouri Valley to shorten their deficit. Missouri Baptist added a point to their score, but Garate responded with a kill, making the score 18-15. The two teams traded the next points, but MBU held a 21-17 lead. A block from both Maggio and Diyani, shortened the Missouri Valley deficit. However, Missouri Baptist took the next two points of the game, enlarging their lead to 23-18. A block by Maggio and Middle Blocker Jose Martins Arcuri (Sao Lourenco, Brazil) added the Vikings a point, but Missouri Baptist took the first game with two-straight points, 25-20.

Missouri Baptist claimed an early lead in game two, winning eight-straight points. The first point for the Vikings came from a kill by Garate. MBU took the next point. Missouri Valley won two-straight points coming from a Spartan error and a block by Diyani and Enev. Missouri Baptist held their lead winning the next point. Enev with a kill made the score 10-4. The Spartans later enlarged their lead, taking three-straight points. The Vikings won the next point of the game, helped by a kill from Maggio. Kills by Garate and Maggio were not enough to reach Missouri Baptist, as the Spartans held a 20-13 lead. Maggio shortened the deficit with a kill. MBU took the next point, but later added a point to the Viking score from an error. Maggio and Garate won two points from kills, but Missouri Baptist took game two, 25-17, going up 2-0 in games.

Game three started with both teams trading points, as the game was tied at 4-4, points coming from two kills by Enev and Spartans service errors. Missouri Valley later won two-straight points coming from a kill by Enev and a block by both Maggio and Diyani. The next point was for MBU, but the Vikings responded with a kill from Maggio and a block by Garate and Martins, holding a 8-5 lead. Missouri Baptist later tied the game with three-straight points, but MVC took the next point. The Spartans won five-straight points and took a 13-9 lead. Missouri Valley added two points to their score from Spartans errors. MBU won the next point of the game, holding a 14-11 lead. Missouri Valley later shortened their deficit taking the next point. However, Missouri Baptist responded with two-straight points. The Vikings took the next point. The Spartans later won two-straight points, making the score 18-13. Maggio with a kill helped the Vikings to add a point to their score. Missouri Baptist held their lead winning two-straight points. A Spartan error, a kill by Enev and a kill by Maggio helped Missouri Valley to win three-straight points. However, the Vikings could not sustain a comeback, as Missouri Baptist went on to win the game, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.

Leading the way for Missouri Valley was Maggio, who finished with 11 kills, 10 digs and a .250 hitting percentage. Enev finished with seven kills and a .227 hitting percentage. Garate added five kills. As a team, the Vikings had 27 total digs.

The loss drops the team to 18-13 overall, while Missouri Baptist pushes to 26-2.

The Vikings will next play No. 4 Warner (Fla.) University in pool play, Friday at 10 a.m.  Missouri Valley is 0-1 against Warner, having lost in four games.
