Men's Volleyball Earns National Invitational Berth

Marshall, Mo. (April 9, 2017)- The Missouri Valley College men’s volleyball team has earned an at-large berth into the 2017 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational, set to take place April 19-22 at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo.  The Vikings will play an opening round match with Ottawa (Kan.) University.


Missouri Valley finished its regular season with a 17-13 overall record, and advanced to the championship match of the 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament.  The Vikings will be making their first appearance at the NAIA National Invitational, and the first National tournament appearance since qualifying for the MAMVIC National Tournament in 2006.


The Vikings enter the National Invitational as the No. 8 seed, and play Ottawa, which earned an at-large bid and will play as the No. 5 seed.  The two teams will meet in an opening round match, Wednesday at 1 p.m., at Missouri Baptist.  The winner of the opening round match will go into pool play, with matches Thursday and Friday.  The semifinal matches will follow pool play Friday, with the National championship match set for Saturday April 22 at 6 p.m.  Missouri Valley and Ottawa split their two matches during the regular season. 


Missouri Valley is one of two Heart teams to earn a berth into the National Invitational.  Grand View (Iowa) University earned an automatic berth with a win over the Vikings in the Heart Postseason Tournament championship match, and was awarded with the No. 1 seed.


In addition to the National Invitational berth, Missouri Valley finished the regular season ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Men’s Volleyball Coaches’ Top 10 Poll.  The Vikings were ranked in each regular season poll during the 2017 campaign.
