Two Vikings Earn Weekly Heart Awards

Marshall, Mo. (April 3, 2017)-  Two Missouri Valley College student-athletes were chosen for weekly awards by the Heart of America Athletic Conference in their respective sports.  Senior Second Baseman Kaya Naiwi (Nanakuli, Hawaii) was named the Heart Softball Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman Malon Lee (Kansas City, Mo.) was named the Heart Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.


Naiwi picked up her first conference award of the season after leading the Vikings to a 5-1 record in games, including a 3-1 record in conference play, over the weekend.  Naiwi finished with a .550 batting average and a 1.050 slugging average.  She totaled 11 hits, six runs scored, nine RBI’s, four doubles and two homeruns.  Naiwi also had the game-winning hits in two victories over Peru State (Neb.) College, both coming in the bottom of the seventh inning.


The wins pushed the Viking softball team to 10-12 overall and 4-8 in the Heart.  The team travels to Benedictine (Kan.) College for a doubleheader Tuesday, starting at 2 p.m., in Atchison, Kan.


Lee picked up her first weekly conference award after leading the Viking women’s track and field team at the Baker (Kan.) University Relays Saturday.  Lee won both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash.  Lee finished with a time of 12.47 in the 100 meter and a time of 25.60 in the 200 meter.


The Viking track and field teams will next be in action Saturday at the Central Methodist (Mo.) University Invite, starting at 11 a.m., in Fayette, Mo.
