Four Student-Athletes Earn Weekly Conference Awards

Marshall, Mo. (March 13, 2017)- Four Missouri Valley College student-athletes have been named athletes of the week in their respective sports from the Heart of America Athletic Conference and the KCAC.  The Viking tennis teams swept the men’s and women’s awards, along with men’s golf and men’s lacrosse picking up honors.


Junior Abdul Alhamzawi (Pompano Beach, Fla.) was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, and Senior Lilian Blasque (Andradina, Brazil) earned the Heart Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honor.  Alhamzawi led the Viking men’s tennis team to a 3-2 record in matches played over Spring Break in Hilton Head, S.C.  He finished with a 5-3 record in matches played, including a 3-1 record in doubles competition.  Blasque led the women’s tennis team to a 4-1 record in matches played over the break.  She also finished 7-1 in singles and doubles play during the week.


Blasque earned her seventh weekly conference award of her career, while Alhamzawi earned his first-career award.  Both Viking tennis teams hold 5-2 records on the season.  Matches scheduled for Tuesday at McPherson (Kan.) College have been postponed due to expected weather.  A make-up date for the matches will be announced at a later time.  The tennis teams are scheduled to play at Ottawa (Kan.) University Sunday at 3 p.m.


The Heart Men’s Golfer of the Week award was given to Junior Grand Numrich (Red Deer, Canada), after he won the Evangel Spring Invite at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.  Numrich finished the two-round event with a +2 (146) to win the tournament by four strokes.  He shot a +1 (73) in the two rounds played Friday.  This is Numrich’s first-career weekly conference award.  The men’s and women’s golf teams will play in the Central Bible (Ark.) College Invite, March 20-21 at the Country Club of Arkansas in Maumelle, Ark.


Freshman Goalkeeper Austin Degross (Apopka, Fla.) of the No. 1 Viking men’s lacrosse team was named the KCAC Men’s Lacrosse Defender of the Week.  Degross earned the first weekly conference award of his career after leading the Vikings to a 22-5 win at Tennessee Wesleyan College and a 13-9 road win at No. 7 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).  Degross made nine saves in the Cumberlands game, and five saves against Tennessee Wesleyan in just one half of play.  The Vikings are 4-1 on the season, and play an exhibition game Saturday at 1 p.m., at Westminster (Mo.) College in Fulton, Mo.
