Two Viking Programs Set for National Championships

Marshall, Mo. (March 1, 2016)- Missouri Valley College will send two of its athletic programs to their respective National championship events this weekend.  The No. 16 men’s wrestling team competes at the 2017 NAIA Wrestling National Championship, Presented by USA Wrestling-Kansas, and the women’s indoor track and field team will send one of its student-athletes to the 2017 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

 

The Viking men’s wrestling team qualified six student-athletes into its National competition, which runs Friday and Saturday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan. 

 

Leading the team into the National championships is Junior Andrew Simmons (Palmdale, Calif.) who ranks No. 3 in the 165 pound weight class.  Simmons enters the championship event with a 22-2 overall record, and he will make this third appearance at the National event.  Simmons finished with a 1-2 record in 2015, and went 2-2 last season.

 

Sophomore Zachary Durbin (Arnold, Mo.), ranked No. 15 at 133 pounds, makes his first appearance in the National championship, and takes a 17-15 record into the 133 pound weight competition.

 

Sophomore Kenny Boyd (Hollywood, Fla.) qualified for his second National championship event, and will compete at 149 pounds.  Boyd is 18-12 on the season, and wrestled to a 2-2 record at last year’s National event.

 

Junior Tobias Barnes (Romulus, Mich.), currently ranked No. 13 at 157 pounds makes his first National championship appearance, and enters the event with a 22-12 record on the season.

 

Sophomore Dalton Tipton (Smithville, Mo.), ranked No. 5, joins teammate Simmons in the 165 pound weight class.  Tipton is 24-8 on the season, and finished with a 2-2 record at last year’s National championship.

 

Senior Justin Smith (Hollywood, Fla.) earned a berth into the National championship, and is currently ranked No. 11 in the 285 pound weight class.  He owns a 25-13 record this season.  Smith competed at the 2016 championships and finished with a 1-2 record.

 

The 2017 NAIA Wrestling National Championship begins Friday at 10 a.m., with the opening two championship rounds, and two consolation rounds.  Friday’s second session starts at 6:30 p.m., with the championship quarterfinals and two additional consolation rounds.  Saturday’s event starts at 10 a.m., with the championship semifinals, and consolation rounds, including the third, fifth and seventh place matches.  The National championship round takes place Saturday at 7 p.m.

 

The Missouri Valley women’s indoor track and field team will be represented by Senior Dorothy Adams (Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.) at the 2017 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships at the David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field in Johnson City, Tenn.

 

Adams will compete in the 600 meter run.  She qualified for the National event with a time of 1:38.05, and is seeded No. 19 heading into the event.  Adams will compete in the preliminary round at 1:45 p.m., Friday.  The championship round takes place Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
