Marshall, Mo. (February 8, 2017)- The Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team climbed up the rankings in the latest NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 Poll, released Wednesday.  The Vikings moved up three spots to the No. 16 position, with six individuals ranked.

Since the previous coaches’ poll was released Jan. 18, the Vikings have placed fourth at the Missouri Valley Invitational, hosted the Missouri Valley Open, and accumulated a 3-1 record in duals, including a 43-4 win over NCAA Division II Truman State (Mo.) University Tuesday evening.

Missouri Valley is one of two Heart of America Athletic Conference schools ranked in this week’s coaches’ poll.  Grand View (Iowa) University comes in at No. 1.  Baker (Kan.) University, Benedictine (Kan.) College and Graceland (Iowa) University are all featured in the “others receiving votes” category.

In addition to the No. 16 team ranking, six individuals on the men’s wrestling team are featured in their individual weight class rankings.  Leading the individuals is Junior Andrew Simmons (Palmdale, Calif.) who moved to No. 3 at 165 pounds.  Simmons was recently named to the Heart All-Conference first team, and owns a 19-1 record on the season.  Other Vikings ranked include:

Freshman Zachary Durbin (Arnold, Mo.), No. 15 at 133 pounds

Sophomore Chase Krutzky (Lakeland, Fla.), No. 15 at 149 pounds

Junior Tobias Barnes (Romulus, Mich.), No. 13 at 157 pounds

Sophomore Dalton Tipton (Smithville, Mo.), No. 5 at 165 pounds

Senior Justin Smith (Hollywood, Fla.), No. 11 at 285 pounds

Up next for the Viking men’s wrestling team is the Central Regional Qualifier, set for Feb. 18, at Grand View (Iowa) University in Des Moines, Iowa.  The top three in each weight class, along with five wildcard selections, will earn a bid into the 2017 NAIA Wrestling National Championships in Topeka, Kan., March 3-4.
