Viking Women's Wrestling Competes in Day 1 of National Duals

Marshall, Mo. (January 5, 2016)- The No. 12 Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team competed in Day 1 at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind., Friday.  The Vikings competed in just one dual in the opening day, and finished with a 31-17 loss to No. 12 Life (Ga.) University in the first round.  Missouri Valley received a bye into the consolation second round against No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.) University, which takes place Friday morning.

 

101 pounds-Missouri Valley left the weight class open.  Life leads, 5-0.

109 pounds-Junior Hilda Garcia (Mount Vernon, Wash.) lost to Kara Payton in a first period pin.  Life leads, 10-0.

116 pounds-No. 5 Senior Christy Powell (Powder Springs, Ga.) defeated No. 8 Alanda Nguyen in a second period (5:00) pin.  Life leads, 10-5.

123 pounds-Junior LoriAnn Archuleta (Peralta, N.M.) lost to No. 5 Kayla Mesar in a 6-4 decision.  Life leads, 13-6.

130 pounds-Sophomore Bethany Davis (Roy, Wash.) defeated Aysia Cortez in a second period (4:03) pin.  Life leads, 13-11.

136 pounds-Junior Anna Poyner (New Hartford, Iowa) lost to Zoe Wight in a 10-4 decision.  Life leads, 16-12.

143 pounds-Missouri Valley left the weight class open.  Life leads, 21-12.

155 pounds-Junior Aideli Martinez (El Paso, Texas) lost to Maria Diaz in a first period pin.  Life leads, 26-12.

170 pounds-Junior Yuneris Taveras (Bronx, N.Y.) lost to No. 7 Nadine Fiege in a first round pin.  Life leads, 31-12.

191 pounds-No. 8 Junior Alyssa Cantu (Stockton, Calif.) won by forfeit.

Life defeated Missouri Valley, 31-17.

 

The loss dropped Missouri Valley to 2-10 in duals this season.

 

Up next for the Viking women’s wrestling team is a consolation second round matchup, which takes place Friday at 9 a.m., EST, 8 a.m., CST., in Fort Wayne, Ind.
