Marshall, Mo. (December 20, 2016)- The Missouri Valley College football finishes its 2016 season ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll.  The Vikings have now finished in the top 15 of the final coaches’ eight times since 2006.

Missouri Valley’s season came to an end back on Nov. 19 with a 79-20 loss on the road in the first round of the NAIA Football Championship Series to eventual National champion University of St. Francis (Ind.).  The Vikings finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-3 overall record and a 4-1 record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division.

Four other teams from the Heart are ranked in final coaches’ poll, led by No. 2 Baker (Kan.) University.  Grand View (Iowa) University comes in a No. 10, followed by Benedictine (Kan.) College at 23 and William Penn (Iowa) University at No. 24.  The Vikings finished the season with a 2-3 record against ranked teams, having lost to St. Francis, Baker and Grand View, with wins over Benedictine and William Penn.

Since the end of the football season, Senior Linebacker Stephen Thayer (Manteca, Calif.) has received National honors.  He was selected to the 2016 AFCA/NAIA All-America First Team earlier this month, and he was announced as a finalist for the 2016 Cliff Harris Award, which recognizes the top small college defensive player.  The award winner will be announced Dec. 24.
