Stephen Thayer Named AFCA/NAIA All-American

Posted December 12, 2016

Marshall, Mo. (December 13, 2016)- Missouri Valley College student-athlete Senior Linebacker Stephen Thayer (Manteca, Calif.) has been named to the 2016 AFCA/NAIA Coaches’ All-America Team.  Thayer continues the program’s streak of selections to the AFCA/NAIA All-America Team that dates back to 2007.

Thayer earned the all-American selection after setting the program’s single-season tackle record with 111 total tackles.  At the conclusion of the MVC season, Thayer led the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division, and was fifth in the NAIA, in tackles-for-loss (21.5), finished second in the division, and seventh in the NAIA, in total sacks (11) and was fourth in the division in fumbles forced (2).  This honor comes after Thayer was named the 2016 Heart Southern Division Defensive Co-Player of the Year, along with a first team all-division selection.

Thayer becomes the eighth Viking selected to the AFCA/NAIA All-America Team since the 2007 season.  The team is selected by coaches within the NAIA, and expanded to include two teams in the 2015 season.

“This is a great accomplishment for Stephen, and one that he worked very hard over the year to achieve,” said Missouri Valley Football Head Coach Paul Troth.  “Stephen is a leader by example, and was a great teammate this season.”

The Missouri Valley football team finished the season with a 9-3 record, including a 4-1 record in the Heart Southern Division.  The team also made its fifth appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series in the past six seasons.
