Marshall, Mo. (October 19, 2016)- The Missouri Valley College men’s soccer team hosted Benedictine (Kan.) College in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match Wednesday evening.  The Vikings, playing in their final regular season home match, got up early, but fell late to the Ravens, 2-1.

The two teams traded possession through the early stages of the first half.  Missouri Valley did begin to build up pressure near the 10-minute mark, culminating with a shot from Senior Forward George Limbert (Leicester, England) near the top of the box, which got past the BC keeper to give Missouri Valley a 1-0 lead.  Senior Midfielder Alejandro Corella (Madrid, Spain) earned the assist on the goal.  Three-minutes later, Junior Forward Slaven Baskalo (Novi Sad, Serbia) nearly added to the Viking lead, but his shot was saved by the Benedictine keeper.  The Ravens eventually built up possession through the midway point of the half, and tied the score at 1-1 with a goal near the 25-minute mark.  Just under 10-minutes later, Sophomore Goalkeeper Patrick Irankunda (Ashford, England) came up with his first save to keep the match tied.  The Vikings were unable to get another shot on goal in the late stages of the half, but Irankunda made a save with three-minutes remaining before the break to help get the match into halftime at 1-1.

Missouri Valley opened the second half with an early chance on goal from Corella, but his shot was saved by the BC keeper.  Senior Forward Rafael Alcaraz (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) tried to break the tie score with a chance on goal after 13-minutes had been played in the half, but his shot was saved.  The Vikings kept Benedictine from getting any opportunities on goal through the opening 25-minutes of the second half, but the Ravens followed with a chance just after the 74-minute mark.  Benedictine claimed a 2-1 lead with a goal, and nearly added to their lead just over one-minute later, but Irankunda came up with a save.  The Vikings tried to get back to a tie score, as Corella put a shot on goal with just over 10-minutes remaining in the second half.  However, his shot was saved.  Missouri Valley could not get another quality chance in the final minutes of the second half, and fell to Benedictine, 2-1.

Limbert scored his fourth goal of the season to lead the Vikings, while Corella added his second assist.  Irankunda made three saves for the Vikings.  Missouri Valley outshot Benedictine by a 9-5 margin.

The loss drops Missouri Valley to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the Heart.  Benedictine improves to 8-3-1 on the season and 7-2 in conference play.

Next up for the men’s soccer team is a road conference game in Lamoni, Iowa, against Graceland (Iowa) University.  The match takes place Saturday at 8 p.m.
