Marshall, Mo. (October 10, 2016)- A pair of Missouri Valley College student-athletes were honored by the Heart of America Athletic Conference for weekly awards in their respective sports.  Senior Midfielder Andrea Garcia (Toledo, Spain) was named the Heart Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Junior Ulysses Orozco (Lake Forest, Calif.) picked up the Heart Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award.

Garcia earned her first-career weekly conference honor after helping the Viking women’s soccer team to a pair of conference wins last week.  Garcia had two assists in a 3-0 home win over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College, followed by one goal and one assist in a 3-1 road win over Clarke (Iowa) University.  The pair of wins pushed the MVC record to 8-2-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the Heart.  The Missouri Valley women’s soccer team sits atop the conference standings as the only team still unbeaten in conference play.

The Viking women’s soccer team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m., hosting Avila (Mo.) University on Senior Night, at Gregg-Mitchell Field.

Orozco picked up the first weekly conference award of his career after leading the No. 25 Viking men’s cross country team at Saturday’s Fort Hays State (Kan.) Open.  Competing against mostly NCAA Division II programs, Orozco finished No. 23 overall with a time of 24:57 in the 8k race.  He was the top NAIA runner, and helped the Vikings to a No. 11 finish, placing ahead of No. 6 University of St. Mary (Kan.).

The Viking cross country teams will next be in action at the Mid-Classic at Southwestern (Kan.) College in Winfield, Kan., Oct. 22.
