Marshall, Mo. (September 20, 2015)- The Missouri Valley College tennis teams competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament in Omaha, Neb., this weekend.  Two Vikings came away as regional champions at the tournament which featured 17 schools.

The Viking women’s doubles teams led the programs at the tournament.  The doubles team of Junior Lilian Blasque (Andradina, Brazil) and Junior Adela Gil (Barcelona, Spain) entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed.  After receiving a first round bye, the pair defeated a team from Ottawa (Kan.) University by an 8-4 score.   Blasque and Gil followed that up with an 8-4 win in the quarterfinals over a team from McPherson (Kan.) College, and advanced to the championship round with an 8-5 win over a team from Ottawa.  The other side of the bracket featured a doubles team of Sophomore Macarena Bielsa (Madrid, Spain) and Junior Beatriz Sales (Botucatu, Brazil).  Entering the tournament unseeded, the Viking pair defeated a team from McPherson by an 8-2 score, followed by a second round defeat of a Tabor doubles team by an 8-2 score.  Bielsa and Sales then picked up an 8-2 win in the quarterfinals over a Morningside (Iowa) College team and an 8-1 win in the semifinals against a team from Baker (Kan.) University to set up an all-Viking championship.

In the women’s doubles championship round, Gil and Blasque won the best-of-three contest over Sales and Bielsa 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), and advanced to the Small College National Championship in October.

“I am very proud of the effort from both doubles teams during the tournament,” said Head Tennis Coach Ryan Carney.  “It is almost unheard of to have both doubles teams play for a championship against each other.  I couldn’t be more pleased with how the tournament played out.”

In women’s singles, Blasque reached the semifinals and Bielsa reached the quarterfinals, but both fell to the same player from Morningside.

The men’s program was led by the doubles pair of Sophomore Stefano Benedetti (Toronto, Canada) and Sophomore Heitor Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who advanced to the quarterfinal round before falling.

Gil and Blasque will compete at the Small College National Championship in Sumter, S.C., which takes place Oct. 15-18.  The pair will play in women’s doubles and should they win the NAIA tournament, the pair will compete against other NCAA Division II, III and NJCAA programs.
