Fine Arts Division to Hold Camp This Summer

The Missouri Valley College Division of Fine Arts will hold a Performing Arts Camp June 15-19. The Camp will run daily from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on the Missouri Valley College Campus. Participants will have the opportunity to take classes in dance, musical theater, acting, Shakespeare and improv.

Students will learn the basics of acting by developing characters and scenes in an environment that challenges them to explore and discover something new each time. Through dance, students will explore the possibilities of human movement through improvisation and technique. Improv students will learn the basics of improv, through games and short scenes. In musical theater classes, students will develop singing and performance skills by working on songs from Broadway musicals. 

The Camp is available for students who have just completed grades 3-12. A registration fee of $50 is due by May 15; the registration fee increases to $75 after May 15.

Scholarships are available for students who are unable to pay the registration fee. Students seeking a scholarship are asked to email a brief scholarship application letter describing how they will benefit from attending the camp to Scholarship acceptance notifications will be sent on May 18.

Missouri Valley College faculty leading the Camp include Harold Hynick, associate professor of theater; Diana Malan, associate professor of music and theater and chair of the fine arts department; and Janie Morgan, associate professor of dance.

Hynick is actively involved in  the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and is a member of the Educational Theatre Association. His professional credits include involvement in over 100 productions including work with the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Arrow Rock, Mo., Stages Repertory Theatre and the Ensemble in Houston.

Malan is the director of MVC Choirs and has been involved in more than 80 MVC theatrical productions. Her groups have performed at locations in Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, St. Louis and Nassau, Bahamas.

Morgan has performed and choreographed for a number of professional companies. Additionally, her research includes studying the impact of purposeful movement and dance on high school and university students with visual impairment.
