MVC's Jacarra Winchester Qualifies for US National Women's Wrestling TeamPosted May 31, 2014
Marshall, Mo. (May 31, 2014)- Missouri Valley College’s Junior Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif.) competed Saturday in the U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wisc. Winchester won her way to the championship match in her weight class and earned a spot on the U.S. women’s wrestling National team with her performance in the 58kg weight class.
Winchester began the competition with a win over Othella Feroleto in a 9-6 decision. In her semifinal match Winchester picked up a victory over Michaela Hutchison with an 8-5 decision.
Winchester advanced to the championship match in the 58kg weight class and competed against Kelsey Campbell. The match ended with Winchester being edged out in a 6-2 decision. Winchester finished the tournament in third place.
“Jacarra had a great day, and I am very proud of the way she wrestled,” said Head Women’s Wrestling Coach Carl Murphree. “She fought hard until the last whistle, and this is definitely an experience we can build on for the future.”
The third place finish at the US World Team Trials earns Winchester a spot on the US National team. She will represent the country in international events later this year and will receive access to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
