MVC Confers 241 Degrees at 2014 CommencementPosted May 12, 2014
Missouri Valley College conferred 241 degrees to students at its 125th commencement ceremony held May 10 at Gregg-Mitchell Field. The 2014 graduating class consisted of 141 Missouri residents, 28 international students and 72 out-of-state students.
MVC Alumnus William Ira Ferguson gave the commencement address. Ferguson is an associate judge on the Illinois Eighteenth Judicial Circuit Court serving in Dupage County, Illinois. Prior to serving on the Illinois Circuit Court, Ferguson worked for a number of law firms including the Law Offices of Donovan and Roberts and the Law Offices of Mountcastle and DaRosa. In 1982, Ferguson went into private practice, opening the Law Offices of William Ferguson in Wheaton, Illinois. He remained in private practice until 1998 when he was selected to serve as associate judge.
Judge Ferguson is a 1971 graduate of Missouri Valley College, earning a degree in education. He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology- Chicago Kent College of Law, graduating with a juris doctorate degree in 1975.
Judge Ferguson and Gary Ford `71, chairman of the MVC board of trustees, were honored with doctorate of humane letters from Missouri Valley College.
Ford has served on the MVC board of trustees for over 20 years, serving as chairman for 10 years. Ford is on the Executive Board of the Great Rivers Council for the Boy Scouts of America and is a board member for the Heart of Missouri United Way, serving over 20 years on the organization’s allocation committee.
Gary Ford spent over 38 years with the Shelter Insurance Company serving in a number of capacities. At the time of his retirement he was serving as vice president of planning and research. In that position, Ford was responsible for budgeting, business and strategic planning, financial forecasting and modeling, competitive intelligence and industry trends.
During the ceremony, two students were presented with the Charles L. Bacon Distinguished Service Award. This award is given annually to a senior man and woman. Seniors Chase Burgess of Lamar, Mo., and Nuwelta Jean-Baptiste of Freeport, Bahamas were the recipients of the Award.
Missouri Valley College trustees, faculty and staff members were recognized at the annual Recognition Banquet on Friday, May 9. Michele Reinke, assistant professor of biology was awarded the John McCallum Excellence in Teaching Award and Brett Fuchs, director of housing and residence life was awarded the President’s Staff Excellence Award. Faculty promotions were also announced at the Recognition Banquet. The following faculty members were promoted to associate professor: Linda Gordon, Harold Hynick, Beverly Katz, David Roberts and Dr. Peter Warnock. In addition, Dr. Gerald Acay was given the title professor emeritus.
