MVC MEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT MISSOURI BAPTIST TUESDAY
Marshall, Mo. (February 25, 2014)- The No. 9 Missouri Valley College men’s volleyball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., Tuesday evening for a matchup with No. 4 Missouri Baptist University. The Vikings were defeated in the top 10 matchup 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-25.
The two teams played even through the early stages of game one, but Missouri Baptist was able to build up a 15-10 lead at one point. The Vikings fought back to trail by just a 16-14 score, but MBU was able to maintain a lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Vikings got back to within three points at 20-17, but the Spartans held on for the 25-20 win in game one.
Game two was played close between both teams, but the Vikings were able to maintain a lead throughout much of the game. MVC eventually led by a 14-9 score midway through the game. MBU got to within two points at 17-15, but the Vikings were able to hold off any late Spartan rally. The Vikings won five of the final six points in the game, and pulled away to win 25-19, and tie the match at 1-1.
MBU started off game three by winning six of the first seven points to hold a large lead. The Vikings found themselves down by five points at 10-5, but could not climb any closer in the game. MBU eventually lead by an 18-11 score before winning game three by a 25-19 score and take a lead 2-1 in games.
The Vikings faced being defeated in game four, and the Spartans came out early to grab a lead. MBU won nine of the first eleven points in the match to hold a 9-2 lead. The Vikings were able to pull back to within three points at 11-8, but the Spartans again won nine out of eleven points to hold a 20-11 lead, before finally winning the game at 25-15 and winning the match 3-1.
Leading the way for MVC was Senior Middle Blocker Jacob Haar (La Mesa, Calif.) who finished with 16 kills. Also, Freshman Opposite Lucas Wurr (Curitiba, Brazil) had 12 kills, four digs, one ace and one block. Senior Setter Will McCracken (Goleta, Calif.) had 36 assists, five digs and one ace.
With the loss Missouri Valley falls to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in the NAIA South. Missouri Baptist improves to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in the NAIA South.
The Vikings will travel to play in the Spartan Invitational at Missouri Baptist University Friday and Saturday. Friday the Vikings will play No. 7 St. Ambrose University at 2 p.m., and Emmanuel College at 6 p.m.
