MISSOURI VALLEY’S TY PHILLIPS IS NAMED AN ALL-AMERICAN
Marshall, Mo. (December 18, 2013)- Missouri Valley College Junior Defensive Lineman Ty Phillips (East St. Louis, Mo.) has been named to the American Football Coaches’ Association NAIA All-American team.
Phillips has earned a number of awards following the 2013 season. To go with his all-American selection, Phillips was named the 2013 Heart of America Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year, the 2013 NAIA Defensive Player of the Year from Beyond Sports Network and he is a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award that recognizes the best small college defensive player which will be announced on Dec. 24.
Phillips finished the season at No. 4 in the NAIA in tackles for loss with 25.5 and No. 7 in sacks with 10.5. He finished second on the team in total tackles with 61.
“This is a great achievement for Ty,” said Head Football Coach Paul Troth. “Ty has been a leader on the defensive side, and has worked hard to get to this point. He definitely deserves this recognition.”
Phillips becomes the sixth Viking to earn an AFCA All-America selection and joins his teammate, Senior Defensive Back Tyler Davis (St. Louis, Mo.) who was selected to the 2012 AFCA All-American team. This marks the seventh straight season the Vikings have had a selection to the AFCA All-American team, all on defense.
MVC finished the 2013 season with a 9-3 record and as co-Heart of America Athletic Conference Champions and NAIA FCS Quarterfinalists.
