Course description: This course is designed to provide undergraduate students in elementary education with an overview of the methods, materials, curriculum, and activities used to teach social studies in grades K-6. The course is intended to help students acquire a repertoire of planning and instructional skills necessary for teaching social studies.
Rationale: This course is intended to help students acquire a repertoire of planning and instructional approaches necessary for teaching social studies. The course will focus on the content and skills taught in social studies, as well as effective teaching strategies and resources used in elementary school classrooms. Students will learn how to plan instructional units based on the Show-Me Standards for Elementary Social Studies. Peer teaching exercises will provide students with opportunities to practice instructional strategies and demonstrate learning resources that may be used in the classroom.

Missouri Valley Attendance Policy:
If you miss more than 50% of a class at any given point in the semester, you will be dropped from the class. This will be recorded as a withdraw fail.

Technology and the classroom: To be successful in this class as well as in college, students will need to be able to perform certain basic operations with the computer. Students in this class will be expected to use DESE's website to obtain a copy of the Social Studies Frameworks and any sample questions available. Students will be expected to review websites that pertain to elementary social studies and apply them to their unit plan. A review and critique of lesson plans on the WWW will be conducted, also interactive websites that can be used to teach elementary students will be reviewed. Students who have difficulty with computer assignments should contact the instructor.

GRADING SCALE:
90% A 80 – 89% B 70 – 79% C 60 – 69% D
All homework must be turned in on assigned date. Late work will be accepted until the next class period with a 10% reduction in grade for that assignment.
If a student misses class the day of a test, it is up to that student to schedule a time to make up the test. The test must be made up before the next class period
This is a tentative schedule that will be varied to meet the needs of the class. Changes to the schedule will be announced in class.
