Course description:   This course is designed to provide undergraduate students in elementary education with an overview of the methods, materials, curriculum, and activities used to teach social studies in grades K-6. The course is intended to help students acquire a repertoire of planning and instructional skills necessary for teaching social studies.

 

Rationale:   This course is intended to help students acquire a repertoire of planning and instructional approaches necessary for teaching social studies. The course will focus on the content and skills taught in social studies, as well as effective teaching strategies and resources used in elementary school classrooms. Students will learn how to plan instructional units based on the Show-Me Standards for Elementary Social Studies. Peer teaching exercises will provide students with opportunities to practice instructional strategies and demonstrate learning resources that may be used in the classroom.

If you miss more than 50% of a class at any given point in the semester, you will be dropped from the class. This will be recorded as a withdraw fail.

Technology and the classroom: To be successful in this class as well as in college, students will need to be able to perform certain basic operations with the computer.   Students in this class will be expected to use DESE's website to obtain a copy of the Social Studies Frameworks and any sample questions available. Students will be expected to review websites that pertain to elementary social studies and apply them to their unit plan.   A review and critique of lesson plans on the WWW will be conducted, also interactive websites that can be used to teach elementary students will be reviewed. Students who have difficulty with computer assignments should contact the instructor.  

 

GOALS:

  1. To explore current beliefs and practices with respect to the place of social studies in the curriculum.
  2. To help students acquire a repertoire of planning and teaching skills that will enable them to provide learning opportunities that support intellectual, social, and personal development for all students.
  3. To show students how to transform social studies knowledge into useful teaching plans and strategies.

 

COMPETENCIES FOR THE SOCIAL SCIENCES: (Performance Indicator 1.2.1.1)

Upon completion of this course, the pre-service teacher should be able to:

  1. Identify the key disciplines, which comprise the social studies and the content knowledge that stems from these disciplines and incorporate the state and national standards into the lesson plans and units that are developed in this course. (Social Sciences Education Standard 1)
  2. Incorporate sound pedagogical techniques, which are grounded in the social studies discipline, into the Social Studies lesson plans that are developed for this course.

  1. Identify how human perceptions of their place on earth have changed over time as well as key historical concepts.   (Social Sciences Education Standard 3)
  2. Develop lesson plans that increase the elementary students knowledge of the basic principles that shape democracy and living in a democratic society. (Social Sciences Education Standards 2 and 4)
  3. Understand how economic concepts and principles of individuals and the economic conditions of society have an affect on each other. (Social Sciences Education Standard 5)
  4. Review various instructional materials, technology, and children's books for validity and appropriate pedagogy for use in their classrooms.   (Social Sciences Education Standard 6)
  5. Develop lessons, that incorporate children's literature, that help students relate to and interact with others by understanding the dimensions of cultural diversity and character education. (Social Sciences Education Standard 7)

GRADING SCALE:

90% ­ A              80 – 89% B        70 – 79% C        60 – 69% D

All homework must be turned in on assigned date. Late work will be accepted until the next class period with a 10% reduction in grade for that assignment.

If a student misses class the day of a test, it is up to that student to schedule a time to make up the test. The test must be made up before the next class period

 

    This is a tentative schedule that will be varied to meet the needs of the class. Changes to the schedule will be announced in class.
