Mike Machholz - Head Coach

machholz  Coach Machholz has been at the helm of the Viking

  wrestling team since 1994. During the 09-10 

  season his team produced a 11-1 dual meet record, placed

  2nd at the NWCA National Duals,

  produced an individual National champion and five All-

  Americans while placing 4th nationally in the

  team race.  During the past 16 years Coach Machholzs'

  teams have produced eleven regional team

  titles, three National Titles, four National Runner-ups as

  well as a third and a pair of fourth place team

  finishes. This past season marked the programs sixteenth

  straight top 10 national placing

  During his first year as Head Coach, Machholz was

  named, “1995 Rookie Coach of the Year” by

  Amateur Wrestling News.  In 2003, Coach Machholz was

  named the NAIA Coach of the Year for

  the third time. Additionally, Coach Machholz has also

  earned eight Regional Coach of the Year

  Awards during his tenure.  Machholz also served as a

  member of the coaching staff for the 1997

  National Wrestling Coaching Association All-Star Classic held in Clarion, PA and directed USA

  Exchange trips to Sydney, Australia where 15 of 18 athletes earned medals in the 1997 Australian

  National Freestyle/Greco Championships and to Beijing, China in 2002 with competitions against the

  Chinese National, University and Army teams.

Currently, Machholz is serving his second stint as the President of the NAIA Wrestling Coaches Association and is also the NAIA liaison to the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee. A native of Marshall, MO and a 1984 graduate of Missouri Valley College, Machholz was instrumental in reviving the Viking wrestling program in 1991. He served as assistant head coach for three years before taking over the reigns in 1994. In 1999 Machholz pioneered the way for Missouri Valley to become the first USA College/University to offer a women's varsity wrestling scholarship program. In the fall of 2004, Machholz was elected to the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame.

During his tenure at MVC, Machholz has coached 130 All-Americans, 15 National Champions, 30 National Finalists, while claiming three national team titles.  His MVC overall dual meet record is 148-75-3.

He is married to his wife Janine of twenty-three years.

 

 

Pat Giangrosso - Assistant Coach

Coach Pat Giangrosso

Coach “G” begins his seventh season as a member of the Viking coaching staff and third season in the role of top assistant. He will continue to work closely with in all phases of the Viking wrestling program and has an active role in the daily management and recruiting efforts of the team. He possesses a vast knowledge of wrestling skill in the neutral position and on the mat in collegiate as well as freestyle and Greco. Pat graduated from MVC in 2003 and capped off his wrestling career as a member of the 2003 National Championship team while earning his second all-American title at 157 lbs. Pat is a graduate of perennial Kansas powerhouse, Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita, Kan., where he was a 5A state champion.

Shawn Terryberry - Volunteer Assistant Coach

Coach Shawn Terryberry

Shawn is starting his second stint as a Viking assistant. Currently he is a member of the MVC faculty in the American Humanics department and very active in campus leadership.  He is a great addition as a lower weight coach and is an avid student of wrestling. He will assist in recruiting and as academic studies co-coordinator for the program. As an undergraduate athlete Shawn was a member of the original 1991 men’s wrestling team and helped begin the traditions of today’s wrestling teams and standout varsity performer.  He is a graduate of Ft. Osage High School in Ft. Osage, Mo., where he was a multiple freestyle state placer and Greco State Champion.  He is married to his wife of four years,  Wanda, the two have one son, Corey.
