Mike Newell
Class of 1998
Wilfred “Mike” Newell graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1956. Mike was an All-American basketball player and is the only Viking to have his jersey retired in honor of his contributions to the team.
While at Missouri Valley College Mike was selected as “Mr. Viking” and award presented by the V-Club for meritorious service to the college in the field of athletics. Mike was a four-year letterman in basketball and earned All-Conference honors three times.
Mike joined the United States Army, which included an assignment as assistant basketball coach for the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Mike was employed at General Motors in St. Louis, and retired from the company after 34 years of service.
Mike and his wife Janice have been married more than 40 years and reside in Martinsburg, WV where he remains active coaching Little League baseball, youth basketball, and football. Mike enjoys hunting and gardening. The Newell’s have four sons, and three grandchildren (one of whom is deceased).Athletic Events
