Paul Troth

Head Coach

 

Coach Paul Troth came to Missouri Valley from Huron University in South Dakota in 2002. The eighth head coach in MVC’s history, Coach Troth has 21 years of coaching experience with 15 of those at the collegiate level. In his first year at Missouri Valley, Coach Troth started the season 4-0 and led the Vikings to an 8-2 overall record. The Vikings ended in a three-way tie for second place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, and cracked the national ratings for the first time in four years. American Football Monthly magazine named Coach Troth the 2002 Schutt Sports NAIA Coach of the Year. In 2006, Coach Troth led the Vikings to a 13-1 overall record, an HAAC championship, an NAIA national semifinal playoff game and a final NAIA #3 national ranking. Coach Troth was named HAAC Coach-of-the-Year and American Football Coaches Association Region III Coach-of-the-Year. In 2007, Coach Troth led the Vikings to a 10-3 overall record and another NAIA national semifinal playoff game and a final NAIA #3 national ranking. Coach Troth was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region III Coach-of-the-Year in 2007. Troth gave much of the credit for his award to his staff and their hard work and overall dedication to the MVC program. While at Huron University Coach Troth lead his teams to three NAIA playoffs which included a trip to the 1998 final four, and the 2000 quarterfinals.

Coach Troth’s 2000 team shared the Dakota Conference Championship, and in 1999 Coach Troth earned Dakota Conference coach of the year honors. Coach Troth left Huron University with a 38-18 (.679 winning percentage) coaching record. In his career, Coach Troth has developed 29 academic all-Americans, and 12 football all-Americans. Coach Troth is holds a bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College and a master’s degree from the University of Memphis, and has taken an impressive path to become one of the top coaches in the nation. Troth’s previous stops (1985-1997) before Huron University include, Lambuth University (Tenn.), University of St. Thomas (Minn.), William Jewell College, and an overseas head coaching positions in Amsterdam, Holland, and Paris, France. During that time Coach Troth accumulated many coaching accolades that include five conference championships, three playoff appearances, offensive coordinator of the year award, two European championships, and six national championships. Coach Troth lives in Marshall with his wife, Heather, his daughters, Kelsey, Keegan,and Karson, and his son, Palmer.

 

 

Curran White

Run Game Coordinator/ Offensive Line Coach/

Recruiting Coordinator

 

Curran White has been a member of the MVC coaching staff since 2005. In 2006 White took over as offensive line coach, and since this time, Valley has led the Heart of America Athletic Conference in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.  MVC has also produced five first- team all-conference selections on the offensive line during that time. Before arriving at Valley, White spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Wayne State College (Nebraska). A native of Pleasant Hill, Calif., White played at Santa Rosa Junior College (California) before transferring to WSC, where he was an all-conference center and academic all-conference selection in 1999. White received a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2001 and a master’s degree in sport management in 2003 from WSC. Coach White also serves as an instructor of physical education and as recruiting coordinator for the Vikings. Curran and his wife, Jodi, reside in Marshall with their four children; Gale, LaVona, Bayer, and Marin.

 

Monty Roe

Assistant Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator/

Linebackers Coach

 

Coach Monty Roe came to MVC in 2005 as defensive coordinator for the MVC Vikings.  In 2006 & 2007, Coach Roe’s defense led the NAIA verses the rush. Coach Roe joined the Viking staff after spending five seasons as defensive coordinator at Wayne State College (Neb.). During his time at Wayne State his 2002 defense ranked third in total defense in the Northern Sun Conference, and he had the opportunity to coach seven all-conference players. Prior to Wayne State, Coach Roe was the defensive coordinator (1998-99) at Dakota State University  where his 1998 defensive was ranked fourth nationally in total defense. Coach Roe spent the 1996 & 1997 seasons at the University of Nebraska-Kearney as a graduate assistant coaching the defensive line and outside linebackers, and the 1994 and 1995 seasons at the University of Sioux Falls as linebacker coach. During his playing career Coach Roe was a three-year letter winner at South Dakota State University where he played middle linebacker and defensive end.  Coach Roe transferred to the University of Sioux Falls for his senior season and was named team captain, defensive team MVP, and all-conference honorable mention.  Coach Roe received his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from South Dakota State University in 1994 and his master’s degree in adaptive physical education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1997.  Coach Roe resides in Marshall with his wife, Amy, and daughters, Elissa, Carlie and Payden.

 

 

Aaron Christensen

Passing Game Coordinator/

Wide Receivers Coach

 

Aaron Christensen joined the Vikings football staff in 2004, serving as the receivers coach since 2005. Before arriving at Valley, Coach Christensen attended Huron University where he played two seasons for Coach Paul Troth as a tight end and earned all-conference honors and two seasons as the tight ends coach. Prior to Huron, Christensen played at San Jose City College near his hometown of Hayward, Calif. Coach Christensen earned his bachelor’s degree in business management at Huron University in 2004. He completed his master’s degree in business management through Lindenwood University in 2006. He resides in Marshall, with his wife Jolene, the Missouri Valley head women’s basketball coach.

 

Denny Honnold

Defensive Backs Coach

 

Coach Honnold enters his second season with the Vikings football coaching staff, and will be working with the defensive backs. Coach Honnold spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State University (Minn.) graduating with a master’s degree in sports management. During his time at SCSU, he coached the running backs and the defensive secondary. Honnold is a 2003 graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in exercise and sports science. In 2005, he was an assistant football coach, head strength and conditioning coach, recruiting coordinator and head resident at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa. In addition to his coaching skills, Honnold has a strong background in strength and conditioning as he was an intern in the Arizona State University Sport Enhancement program in the spring of 2003, and was an Olympic sports assistant strength and conditioning coach at Iowa State University from 2000 to 2003. Denny resides in Marshall.

 

 

 

Barry Rave

Special Teams Coordinator/

Defensive Line Coach

Coach Rave has been part of the MVC coaching staff since 2008, and is the special teams and defensive line coach after coaching one season as the linebackers coach. Three of Coach Rave’s linebackers received all-conference awards in the 2008 season. Coach Rave comes to MVC from Dakota State University in Madison, S.D.  In four seasons with DSU, Coach Rave served as the defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and camp coordinator. Coach Rave also worked with both the defensive line (three years) and the linebackers (one year) in his four years at Madison. In three seasons serving as DSU’s defensive line coach and special teams coordinator, Coach Rave produced four all-conference performers and one NAIA football.net all-American. A native of Dell Rapids, S.D., Coach Rave graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in HPER and a minor in recreation, and recently graduated with a master’s degree in education technology from Dakota State University. Prior to Dakota State, he served as a student assistant coach at South Dakota State University from 1999 to 2002. While at SDSU, Coach Rave assisted with the defensive line, linebackers, and various special teams. Barry, and his wife, Courtney, reside in Marshall.

 

 

J. J. Aller

Tight Ends Coach

 

J.J. Aller returns to the Viking football coaching staff and will be working with the tight ends. J.J. is a 1988 Smith-Cotton High School graduate in Sedalia , Missouri . He played collegiate football at Baker University in Baldwin City , Kansas and went on to have pro kicking tryouts with the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks. Aller was on the Viking football staff in 2002 and was the kicking coach and assistant special teams coach. He left Valley, spent one year at University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg , Missouri and was a coaching intern with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. J.J. and his wife Kathy live in Knob Noster, Missouri .
