MVC RODEO TEAM GETS A NEW RESIDENCE HALL

Completion set for fall 2010

Marshall, Mo. (December 4, 2009) — Construction has started at the site of a new Missouri Valley College residence hall. The facility is being built next to Mack Porter Stables, which is located just south of the MVC campus, and is being funded by gifts from Lloyd ’47 and Iris ’49 Brown and Mack ’47 and Mary Helen Porter.

The two‐story residence facility will house 48 students, primarily MVC rodeo team members. With over 10,000 square feet, plans include a nearly 1,200 sq. ft. commons area and a “mud” room that will include lockers for student‐athletes to store their equipment. To accommodate the larger sized vehicles driven by most of the students, parking spaces will be built with extra space.

“Mack Porter and his family have been and continue to be the cornerstone of the rodeo program,” said Eric Sappington, MVC vice president of institutional advancement. “It is no surprise he is supporting this project. Lloyd and Iris Brown have supported previous residence hall projects, which have positively impacted many students on campus.”

The 2008‐09 rodeo teams are made up of 43 student‐athletes representing 16 states and two countries (U.S. and Canada). They compete in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s (NIRA) Ozark Region. The teams have acquired numerous honors. Most recently the men’s rodeo team was the 2008 and 2009 Ozark Region Champ, and the women’s team was the 2009 Reserve Champs in the Ozark Region. Coach Ken Mason has coached the Vikings since 2006 and was named the 2009 NIRA Ozark Region Coach of the Year.

“This new facility is essential for future recruitment,” Mason said. “It’s been a long‐time goal of the programs to have a new housing facility, and we’re really excited for it to be completed and have our student‐athletes move in.”

For the past several years, most rodeo student‐athletes have been housed in Saline Hall, which is located north of Highway 240 about 4 miles from the MVC campus.

“The new facility brings the athletes toward campus and makes it much easier for them to manage their livestock,” said Tom Fifer, athletic director and VP of enrollment management and operations. “The rodeo team is a valued part MVC’s athletic department and we’re really proud to get this facility built for them.”

The expected completion date for the residence hall is August 2010 with students moving in for the fall 2010 semester.
