Troubleshoot Network Connection

HardCoded IP Address for:

Windows Vista/7:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Network & Sharing Center.
  3. Navigate to Manage Network Connections.
  4. Navigate to TCP/IPv4.
  5. Navigate to Properties.
  6. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Windows 2000:

  1. Go to "Start," then "Settings," and click "Control Panel."
  2. Double-click "Network and Dial-up Connections."
  3. Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties."
  4. Highlight your "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button.
  5. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
  6. If you have "Specify an IP address" selected, your IP is hard coded and your internet will not work properly. Change the setting to "Obtain an IP address automatically," click "OK" twice, then reboot your machine.

Windows XP:

  1. Go to "Start," then click "Control Panel."
  2. Click "Switch to Classic View" if you have the option.
  3. Double-click "Network Connections."
  4. Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties."
  5. Highlight your "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button.
  6. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
  7. If you have "Specify an IP address" selected, your IP is hard coded and your internet will not work properly. Change the setting to "Obtain an IP address automatically," click "OK" twice, then reboot your machine.

Missing Drivers or Disabled Hardware:

  1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager.
  3. Make sure that the Network Adapter is not marked with a yellow exclamation, question mark, or a red "X".
  4. If your network adapter is marked with a red "X" simply right-click on it and select enable.
  5. If your network adapter is marked with a yellow exclamation point or question mark you are missing the drivers for it. These can be obtained through the manufacturer's web site.
