Hello! I am Tonya Eddy, Director of Nursing Education here at Missouri Valley College. As you complete your own educational journey, it is sometimes useful to know how others have completed theirs. I have been working on my personal journey for what seems like a very long time. I received my LPN certification in 1989 from State Fair Community College, followed by my ADN degree in 1991. After working in several areas of nursing I returned to complete my BSN at the University of Missouri, Sinclair School of Nursing in 2001. I then completed a dual Master’s degree as a Nurse Educator and a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Maternal/Child Health. I am currently working on my PhD in Nursing, also at the University of Missouri.

As a nurse I have held many jobs in a variety of areas in the 20+ years of my career, including OB, ER and Med/Surg staff nurse, Research nurse on projects related to intimate partner violence and smoking cessation in pregnancy, agency nursing in the Kansas City area, and employee health nurse/patient advocate at the Children’s Therapy Center in Sedalia. My educator career includes teaching at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing for five years – two of which I coordinated the on-line RN to BSN option, State Fair Community College, and Med-Technician educator with the Therapy Center.

My primary foci include breastfeeding, partner support during pregnancy, delivery and the post-partum period, and cultural/spiritual diversity in nursing. My dissertation topic is ‘Psychosocial Factors related to Duration and Exclusivity of Breastfeeding among Low-income, Rural, Mid-Missouri Women’.

I teach a variety of courses within the Nursing Program including NU110 Introduction to Nursing as a Profession, NU150 Health Assessment, NU210 Culture in Nursing, NU280 Medication Administration, NU350 & 352 Community and Public Health Nursing, NU430 & 435 Research & Theory in Nursing I & II, and the occasional GS150 Freshman Seminar.

My hobbies are reading, anything involving my 3 children, and movies, movies, movies. I also like to garden, travel, quilt, and various other arts & crafts.
